For fans of The X-Files, it is likely a lot of fun seeing Gillian Anderson stepping back into the role of a fierce and determined investigator. However, The Fall is a much more grounded crime mystery yet one that captures a similar engrossing tone. Anderson stars in the series, which is set in Northern Ireland, as Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, who specializes in taking on open murder investigations that have become stale.
The show also stars Jamie Dornan as a serial killer who is targeting young women in Belfast. Focusing on the single case helps to set The Fall apart from other shows in the genre. It is also unique to examine an investigation that is still fresh yet has slowed over time. Anderson is excellent as the sharp and skilled detective who encounters more than a few obstacles, while Dornan makes for an effectively menacing target in this cat-and-mouse tale.

Prime Suspect ran for over a decade, with Mirren taking the character of Tennison on a thrilling journey as a grounded and complex character within this genre. She elevates the show with a tour-de-force performance, and there are also some excellent supporting players who join her along the way, such as Tom Wilkinson and Ralph Fiennes. The Bridge was a 2011 Nordic crime drama that centered on a body being found on the border between Sweden and Denmark, forcing detectives from each of the neighboring countries to work together to solve the case. The interesting concept led to a number of adaptations set in different locations, including the America-Mexico border series also called The Bridge. The concept was used again for this story about a body appearing in the Channel Tunnel connecting England and France.
As with the other series that have used this concept, the pairing of the detectives is essential to the success of The Tunnel. Stars Stephen Dillane and Clémence Poésy are excellent as the two very different cops, each with their own flaws and their own brilliant approaches to the job. The truth behind the case becomes more interesting as they dig deeper into this murder and the work of a serial killer on the loose.

While there are plenty of police procedurals that are able to tell the same type of crime stories and still be compelling, sometimes it’s fun to find a show that takes a different approach to the genre. Such is the case with Vigil, with the first season of the show following Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva of the Scotland police as she investigates a death aboard a ballistic missile submarine.
The show is a tense and gripping thriller that has a lot of fun exploring how the military and the police can butt heads during an investigation like this as it becomes clear that the supposed accidental death is part of something more. The series returned for a second season, which continued the military theme with Silva investigating a drone killing soldiers on a military base. Suranne Jones is a strong lead for the series, while she is also joined by Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie as Silva’s professional and romantic partner.

However, it is thrilling to see a show like Line of Duty truly examining the darker side of law enforcement. It provides for more of a variety of cases than viewers might expect with the suspects ranging from those who are full-blown criminals to those who felt they were doing the right thing.

This series is dedicated to his adventure as Poirot travels around and finds himself faced with one baffling case after another, using his keen intelligence to get to the bottom of it.
The real joy is just seeing this clever detective discover the truth as everyone else is left clueless.
Many actors took on the role of Poirot, most recently with Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot movies. However, none are better than David Suchet in this television series, which adapted every Christie novel featuring the detective. While it is fun to see the show take on some of the most famous cases, like Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, the real joy is just seeing this clever detective discover the truth as everyone else is left clueless.

Hercule Poirot might have been the most famous character created by Agatha Christie, but he wasn’t the only one, nor the only interesting and captivating detective. Miss Marple also stars in Christie’s novels as a shrewd older woman who frequently finds herself involved in murder mysteries. Unlike the professional detective Poirot, Marple is a kindly amateur sleuth helping her friends and neighbors solve their own mysteries.
The show Marple features two actresses taking on the role (Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie), and both bring their charm and uniqueness to the character. Marple is a charming and quaint character who can be the perfect antidote forsome of the most brooding and dark detectives in modern British mysteries. There is a comforting, cozy quality to the stories that capture Christie’s brilliant mystery writing style.

The show has remained on the air for more than a decade despite some big cast changes. And even with its comedy, it has proven it can go to some dark places as well and shock the audience. However, it remains a fun and different type of murder mystery show for those looking to shake things up.

Another adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective has proven to be one of the most popular interpretations. Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the role of Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock, alongside Martin Freeman as John Watson. However, this time around, it is Sherlock and Watson solving cases in the 21st century with the modern take on the character working surprisingly well.
The show delivered four seasons, but there remains hope among fans for a possible Sherlock movie.

Cumberbatch is terrific as the more abrasive and socially alienating Holmes while Freeman is the most capable Watson ever introduced. The show delivered four seasons, but there remains hope among fans for a possible Sherlock movie.

Another common trend that emerged in murder mystery shows in the 21st century was moving away from the noble detectives who simply solve the cases with hard work and towards those who were more flawed and willing to push the boundaries in order to see justice served. John Luther certainly falls into the latter category. Played by Idris Elba, Luther is a genius detective at the Serious Crime Unit in the United Kingdom. His brilliance sometimes leads him to think on par with the criminals that he is investigating, which often plays into his own violent tendencies.
Luther’s character is critically obsessive so his job as a murder detective takes precedence over everything else in his life, including personal relationships. The show had incredible success after its first run in 2010, with almost 6 million people tuning in to Luther for every episode. It ended after five seasons, although a Luther movie arrived in 2023 with Elba back once more.

However, Walker left the show after the fourth season, replaced by Sinéad Keenan as DCI Jessica ‘Jessie’ James. While most murder mystery shows are all about the race against the clock to solve the newest murder, it is fascinating to see these detectives dive into decades-old cases with the evidence, witnesses, and truth all faded over the years.
