After Dario G’s death aged 53, fellow 90s legend Sonique has revealed a devastating conversation she had with her friend and collaborator.
Dario G, real name Paul Spencer, had been diagnosed with stage four rectal cancer in June last year.
The music icon was best known for his hits like Sunchyme and Carnaval de Paris, dominating the dance scene in the 90s.
His family broke the news on Monday, June 17, sharing that Spencer had ‘remained positive until the end’ and left behind a ‘wonderful music legacy’.
After paying tribute on his Instagram, Sonique told Metro.co.uk she had spoken to her friend just three weeks before his death.
‘A couple of tears did have to drop out but I knew what was happening,’ the It Feels So Good singer revealed.
‘We were close enough that I spoke to him about three weeks ago,’ the 53-year-old artist continued. ‘He did ask me “Don’t tell anyone” and he said, “You know, it’s bad”.
‘So I knew, but I promised him that I wasn’t going to tell anyone. I was almost prepared for that to happen but it was difficult.
‘That was the saddest [memory].’
The pair collaborated on a song in 2021 called Keep On Lovin’ which urges listeners to embrace positivity and to reach out to each other.
Over the years their musical talents meant the duo were constantly crossing paths and formed a professional friendship.
Sonique called them ‘geeks in fancy clothing’, sharing how she bonded with Spencer over their deep appreciation of music as an art form.
She laughed as she reminisced: ‘We’d have long discussions about music because you know, music people are really just geeks disguised in fancy clothes, hiding behind sunglasses.
‘We just sat there just talking about on the phone [or wherever] just talking about music and sounds and harmonies and what sounds you wanted. We just went on and on and on about it.’
Sonique told us one of her fondest memories is discovering how talented Spencer was on the piano and as a songwriter and musician.
They were in the studio one day and he ‘just started playing that piano’, surprising and impressing the Brit Award winner.
‘I had no idea,’ she confessed. ‘He’s very talented, you’d see him there and he’s just he’s an absolute genius.
‘He’s an accomplished musician and a great songwriter. I don’t think people really knew that and I didn’t realise until we were working together.
‘When we were doing all these harmonies, he knew all the harmonies, I was just like, “Wow”. I was just so impressed with that and was just thinking “This guy’s really cool”.’
Sonique reiterated what a great ‘talent’ Spencer was, citing how the world reacted to his loss as evidence of his lasting legacy.
Choking up slightly, she concluded: ‘It was hard but I knew even then [three weeks ago] it was… it was not good.’
The Can’t Make Up My Mind singer is one of many, including DJ Sigala, who has shared a tribute to the late, great Dario G.
On the Instagram post announcing his death, she wrote: ‘Rest in peace my friend. We will miss you, that’s for sure.’
