The 80s have been making a comeback in a big way recently with the announcement of a string of comeback shows from a number of icons.
The most recent to delight fans with news of his return is singer-songwriter Sananda Maitreya, formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby.
The American singer-songwriter – known for hit songs like If You Let Me Stay and Sign Your Name – is set to grace a UK stage in a rare performance this summer at the Love Supreme Jazz Festival.
Maitreya came to fame with his debut studio album, Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D’Arby, in 1987. The album debuted at number one in the UK and spent a non-consecutive nine weeks on top. The album earned him a Grammy Award in the category Best R&B Vocal Performance in 1989.
Joining the likes of Chaka Khan, Olivia Dean, Dionne Warwick, Joss Stone, Kool & The Gang, and more, Sananda’s return promises to be a highlight of the festival for old and new fans alike.
The performance will mark Maitreya’s first UK performance in 20 years, causing fans to take to social media to celebrate the Grammy winner’s return.
Under a Facebook post about the show, one fan Libby Danahar wrote ‘I’m so excited by this news!!’ while another, Una Adarkwa, chimed in, ‘This is awesome.’
Reflecting on his decision to return to the UK, Maitreya expressed his anticipation for the event, stating, ‘I’ve invested a lot in English culture and English culture has, of course, given me a tremendous amount of inspiration.
‘The time is right, and I am happy to return and I’m excited about bringing my music and my new songs to a live audience,’ he told Smooth Radio.
In addition to his performance, Sananda teased his upcoming album, The Pegasus Project: Pegasus & The Swan, slated for release later this year. ‘And I’m also excited about my new work,’ he shared.
Reflecting on his decision to legally change his name in October 2001, Sananda explained, ‘Terence Trent D’Arby was dead. He watched his suffering as he died a noble death. After intense pain I meditated for a new spirit, a new will, a new identity.’
Scheduled to take place at Glynde Place in East Sussex from July 5 to 7, the festival will showcase Maitreya on the 6th.
Tickets for the Love Supreme Jazz Festival are currently available, starting at £72 for various admission options.
