Atletico Madrid are keen to sign Mason Greenwood this summer but are not willing to meet Manchester United’s asking price for the striker.

Greenwood, 22, left United to join Getafe on a season-long loan deal on the final day of last summer’s transfer window.

He has not played for the Premier League club since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

All charges were dropped last February and following an international investigation at the club, United were considering reintegrating him back into the squad. A major backlash prompted a rethink, however, paving the way for his move to Spain.

While United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has not closed the door on Greenwood returning to the club, club officials have been sounding out interest in Spain over a permanent sale.

Atletico are among the sides interested in the striker who is admired by the coaching staff and senior management at the Wanda Metropolitano, according to Mundo Deportivo.

However, United’s asking price, thought to be £51.3milliom (€60m), has been viewed as an ‘outrageous’ demand by Diego Simeone’s side.

Earlier this month, United’s football director, John Murtough, and head of director of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, met with Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, and two CAA Base agents, Frank Tramboli and Fede Massai, in Barcelona.

During those talks to gauge’s Barcelona’s interest, the Catalan giants reportedly confirmed their interest but made it clear that valuation placed him out of their reach.

Greenwood has scored eight goals and laid on five assists in his 27 appearances for Getafe this season. The Madrid club are eager to keep him for another season and are keen on another loan deal.

However, United are said to be only focused on selling the forward if they decide he is no future in Manchester.

Speaking in February, United’s co-owner Ratcliffe said: ‘We need to look at facts, judge fairly and take into consideration what the values of the club are.

‘Then we come out of that with a decision. It is not appropriate for me to comment on Mason Greenwood.’
