FG Set To Launch National ID Card With Debit, Credit Card Features

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) plans to launch a better National Identity Card (NIC) that can also be used for payments and social service programs. This is a joint effort with the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through AFRIGOPAY Financial Services.

The card, called AfriGO, is part of a scheme by the Central Bank and AFRIGOPAY to handle transactions within Nigeria, like regular debit cards.

Why the National Identity Card is Useful:

This improved identity card helps people verify who they are and access government and private services. It also helps include more people in the financial system, which can empower citizens and help with national development.

Who Can Get the Card:

Only Nigerian citizens and legal residents with a National Identification Number (NIN) can apply for this card. You can get it from banks, online through bank websites and apps, certain centers, or NIMC offices.

What You Can Do with the Card:

You can link the card to your bank account for payments. It can be used as a debit, credit, or prepaid card for various social programs run by the government.

How Long the Card is Valid:

The card is valid for five years from when it’s issued.

Security and Privacy:

NIMC promises to keep your personal data safe. The card has security features to protect your information, even in areas with poor network coverage.

Other Features:

The card has a Machine-readable Zone (MRZ) with passport information, issue date, and other personal details stored in a chip. It can also be used for travel, health, and insurance purposes.
