Coronation Street kicks off most controversial story ever | Soaps

Toyah’s past is revisited (Picture: ITV)

This week’s Coronation Street will see the start of a hugely controversial storyline as Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) reveals she buried her stillborn baby in the park after being raped in the early 2000s.

In 2001, Toyah enjoyed a night out with mechanic Sam Kingston (Scott Wright), but on her way home was raped and brutally left for dead in the ginnel behind Coronation Street.

After being discovered by Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas), she revealed the ordeal to her mum and a number of potential suspects were lined up as her attacker.

Following a number of Weatherfield men being questioned, it was later revealed that acquaintance Phil Simmonds (Jack Deam) was responsible, after Toyah recognised the tone of his voice. Heartbreaking scenes saw Toyah taken to the police station and examined by a doctor who asked if she was on any form of contraception.

The doctor recommended that she take the morning after pill but she seemed to be more concerned about contracting a sexually transmitted infection such as HIV. There is a small chance that the pill can fail to work.

As Toyah was one of the soap’s most prominent characters that year, she continued to make regular appearances and showed no signs of pregnancy.

This new narrative starts when Toyah heads to the park to look for Roy’s (David Neilson) dog Freddie, who dashed off during his walk with Sam (Jude Riordan).

When she arrives, Toyah finds three sleuths digging up a rose bed. They reveal they saw Freddie digging in the same place, and believe Roy has buried Lauren’s (Cait Fitton) body there.

After hearing this, Toyah sees red, picks up a shovel and smashes their car window while a member of the group films her on his phone.

Thankfully, Nick (Ben Price) arrives and persuades Toyah to put down the shovel as she bursts into tears.

Later in the week, when Joel (Calum Lill) asks Leanne (Jane Danson) if she liked her rose Toyah bought her, Leanne’s bemused and quizzes her sister on it.

Toyah remains adamant that she was right to defend Roy’s reputation but when she calls the location in the park ‘such a special place’, Nick feels puzzled.

When Nick later returns home, he finds Toyah in tears. With no choice, she reveals that when she was 19, she gave birth to a stillborn baby girl, kept it a secret and buried her in the same place in the park where she found the sleuths digging up.

She then takes a deep breath and reveals to Nick that the baby’s father was Phil Simmonds, the man who raped her.

But when Simon (Alex Bain) returns home, he tells Nick and Toyah that the police are digging up North Cross Park and Bobby (Jack Carroll) reckons a body has been found.
