Concerns have been raised that Channel 4 hit 24 Hours in A&E could be axed after more than a decade on our screens.

The broadcaster confirmed that no new episodes of the docuseries would be filmed this year and said it would make a ‘recommission decision at an appropriate time.’

24 Hours in A&E, which films life in Britain’s busiest hospital departments, has been a Channel 4 staple since its first broadcast in 2011.

In the 13 years since it has produced 32 series and more than 300 episodes.

The show began life at King’s College Hospital in London before moving to St George’s Hospital, also in South London, in 2014.

For the last two years, the series has been cutting more of its episodes in the North of England with local talent, part of Channel 4’s move out of London.

However, Channel 4 confirmed it had halted filming on the series (Picture: Mark Taylor / Channel 4)

Broadcast first reported Channel 4’s decision to halt filming on the series, which affects more than 100 crew members employed by production company The Garden.

However, Channel 4 did assure viewers that there were some already filmed but unseen episodes ready to air.

In a statement to The Sun, Channel 4 said: ‘Whilst we’re not filming more new episodes this autumn, we have a high number of recently filmed but not yet aired episodes, which means we’ll continue to bring all the behind-the-scenes access from Queen’s Medical Centre Nottingham’s A&E department.

‘Channel 4 always looks to provide a mix of new shows and familiar returners and 24 Hours in A&E remains an important part of that distinctive blend.

‘We’ll make a recommission decision at an appropriate time, once we’ve aired more of the episodes we have already filmed.’

Channel 4 has seen major shake-ups recently following a new five-year plan announced by bosses in January, which focuses more on streaming rather than traditional television.

Greg’s Traitors style show Rise and Fall was also not recommissioned (Picture: Channel 4)

Shows that did not make the cut include Greg James’s Rise and Fall.

The controversial game show brought together 16 ordinary people as they competed for the position of power and £100,000, in a format that had some parallels with the enormously popular BBC show The Traitors.

It was also announced that  Danny Dyer’s reality series Scared of the Dark had been scrapped after one season.

24 Hours in A&E is available to stream on Channel 4.
