Wheel of Fortune’s reputation for being a family-friendly gameshow was dashed when a contestant’s X-rated answer made the audience gasp.

On Thursday’s episode, players had to fill in gaps in this well-known phrase, having been given the clue: ‘ _ _ _ _   _N  T_E  _ _ _T!’

Looking confident, contestant Tavaris immediately buzzed and responded: ‘Right in the butt!’

The answer drew gasps and laughter from the studio audience, while a shocked player was heard exclaiming: ‘Whaaatttt?’

Realising his mistake on live TV, Tavaris widened his eyes and looked a little shell-shocked.

After presenter Pat Sajak, 77, informed Tavaris he was incorrect, a contestant correctly answered: ‘This is the best!’

Naturally, the clip went viral on social media with YouTube users calling it one of the best moments ever in Wheel of Fortune.

As @brainburrito explained: ‘One for the annals of ‘Wheel’ history.’

@mattwestrick6088: exclaimed: ‘The answer made him a hero. The face afterward made him a legend.’

Echoing their sentiment, @MichaeldeFilippi added: ‘Laughed so hard seeing this live today.’

The episode was one of Pat’s last Wheel of Fortune duties before he retires as a host on June 7.

Pat has held the role since 1981 – meaning he has been the show’s presenter for 43 years.

Throughout his tenure, the TV star was nominated for 19 Daytime Emmys for outstanding game show host, taking home the trophy three times.

He also holds the Guinness World Records title for ‘having the longest career as a game show host for the same show’.

Although he will no longer be the face of the competition, Pat will be staying on board as a consultant for the next three years.

Wheel of Fortune has aired continuously in the United States since 1975. It was originally hosted by Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford.
