Pop icon Meghan Trainor recently teased her unique idea for a James Bond theme tune.
The legendary film franchise is known for plenty of things – from 007’s witty one-liners to its high-tech gadgets and sultry Bond girls – but it’s also spawned a number of hit theme songs.
Adele, Billie Eilish, Sir Tom Jones, and Madonna are all among the award-winning artists to have released singles for Bond films.
And the latest to throw their hat in the ring for the upcoming 007 flick is All About That Bass hitmaker Trainor, 30, as she revealed it would be a ‘dream gig’ to write a Bond theme.
The singer shared she would love to cover an existing Bond song – which would be a first for the franchise as every song so far has been original recordings for the film.
When asked by Metro.co.uk at the Capital Summertime Ball if she would be up for covering a James Bond theme, said ‘I love a cover, I could do it’, adding that she ‘knows all of them.’
‘They’re iconic. That’s like a dream gig for songwriters,’ she added.
Plenty of artists have covered Bond songs following their release – but one hasn’t been used officially for a film yet.
Dame Shirley Bassey is the only singer to perform more than one Bond theme – recording the themes for Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker.
Sir Paul McCartney’s Live and Let Die was the first Bond theme to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, peaking at number 9 in the UK charts and number 2 in the US.
Adele’s Skyfall was the first Bond song to win an Academy Award in 2013 for Best Original Song, as well as a Grammy Award.
Sam Smith’s Writing on the Wall from Spectre also nabbed an Academy Award, as did Billie Eilish’s most recent entry into the world of Bond, No Time to Die.
Speaking at the time of the single’s release, Bad Guy hitmaker Billie, 22, said she feared No Time to Die wouldn’t be ‘good enough’ for Daniel Craig’s final outing in the iconic Bond role.
‘Daniel had to be the one to sign off on it and it’s a really big deal to him, it’s his entire last 17 years or something, and that’s a lot for him,’ she told Deadline’s Crew Call podcast.
‘It was his last film, it’s something that has taken over his life for as long as he’s done it and been incredibly important.
‘Of course this movie is going to be the most important because it’s the last one. The song needs to be good. I didn’t know if it was going to be good enough for him,’ she said.
