A Quiet Place: Day One is dominating the box office, but Inside Out 2 is also holding strong. The Quiet Place prequel was first released on June 27 and has been outperforming expectations by a large margin. Inside Out‘s sequel has also been dominating the box office since it was first released on June 14 and has thrived with little competition. They have very different genres, as Quiet Place is violent and horrifying, while the Pixar hit is an animated story about emotion and personal growth.
Despite their differences, Deadline reports that the two movies are in tight competition. A Quiet Place debuted to a projected $53 million on the weekend, which would be a franchise record. Its competition, however, is expecting between $55 million and $59 million in its third weekend. As the two battle for the top spot at the box office, Day One earned $22.5 million on its opening day, while Inside Out 2 brought in $17.1 million on the same day. That total is also a record for the Quiet Place franchise, which previously touted a $19.3 million opening as its best-ever.

Inside Out 2 Is Ahead In A Tight Race
The tight fight between Inside Out and Quiet Place is ushering in a profitable weekend for the box office after a painfully slow year. Pixar’s latest hit has ruled the box office for weeks and is now facing its first major competition. With Despicable Me 4 entering the box office next week, it needs to bring in a strong performance this week to ensure that it keeps up its momentum through the July 4 weekend. It has already earned over $400 million domestically and $450 internationally, making for an incredible worldwide total of over $850 million in just three weeks.

The highly anticipated sequel to Inside Out premieres in June 2024, and Pixar has big expectations following the first movie’s box office success.
Day One is also thriving. Its opening weekend saw the highest-grossing opening day total in the history of the Quiet Place franchise. The previous two movies both grossed under $20 million domestically, and the franchise has been trending up with every iteration. The opening day total does not necessarily project record-breaking numbers overall, however. The original movie earned the current highest overall total, despite the lowest opening-day take in franchise history. It will need to continue to see strong performances to break the $188 million record. Check out the chart below to see every domestic total in the franchise:

Outside of the top two movies, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One rounds out the top three with a $4.1 million take on Friday. It is expected to end the weekend with double digits, but it is far from reaching the massive takes of the top two. With a budget of between $100 million, Horizon will need to fight to reach profitability before Chapter Two hits theaters in August. As Inside Out 2 and A Quiet Place: Day One battle it out, the rest of the box office is lying relatively low.
