Horror veteran Maika Monroe reveals that A Nightmare on Elm Street is the horror franchise she would like to join next. Known for her work within the horror and thriller genres, which have solidified her as a scream queen, the actor first broke through with a role in the 2014 horror film It Follows and now, a decade later, a sequel is in development. Monroe currently stars in Longlegs, which just opened to $22.6 million at the box office, the best opening yet for an original horror movie in 2024.
Now, shortly after Longlegs was released in theaters, Monroe revealed which horror franchise she would like to join next – A Nightmare on Elm Street. In an interview with Collider, the actor says she saw the original 1984 movie when she was “probably too young of an age” and found it particularly terrifying since the horror occurs when the characters are asleep. A Nightmare on Elm Street. Definitely. I saw that at probably too young of an age, and I think because the movie is about when you fall asleep, sh-t hits the fan. I didn’t want to sleep, and that’s, like, the most terrifying thing in the world. I was obsessed, so I would love to be a part of that.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a popular choice for actors and directors, with many others expressing interest in joining the franchise. This is simply because of how iconic the original 1984 film and its central villain Freddy Krueger are, but also because of how the horror franchise hasn’t had a proper installment since 2010, and is begging to be rebooted. In the past 14 years, development on a new installment has struggled since the Wes Craven Estate acquired the rights to the series following the director’s death.
