Three Years Ago, Star Wars Secretly Brought Back Legends’ Origin Of The Light Side Itself

Summary

  • Star Wars canon has reintroduced the moon Ashla, a light side moon of the planet Tython from the Legends timeline.
  • The Je’daii Order used Ashla for light side meditation and Bogan for dark, which ultimately led to the Force Wars and the Jedi Order’s establishment.
  • Ashla was reintroduced in 2021 to the modern canon, when it was used by the Jedi Elzar Mann for meditation.

In 2021, the modern Star Wars canon introduced its own version of a location from the Star Wars Legends continuity – with ties to the concept of the “light side” of the Force. Legends, having once been the official Star Wars canon, became both an alternate timeline and a wellspring of inspiration for the modern Star Wars canon, which began in April 2014. Characters, locations, starships, and concepts from the original Legends timeline have received counterparts in the newer timeline, with one moon from the Deep Core being a recent example.

The dichotomy of the Force itself is the subject of differing perspectives and fierce debates, both in-universe and among Star Wars viewers. According to the original Star Wars movies and most of the Legends timeline’s materials, there is a dark side of the Force, but not a “light side,” with the latter concept simply being shorthand for the Force in its natural, balanced, state. In newer materials in the modern canon and some properties from the Legends continuity, however, the Force is misinterpreted as having both a light and dark side, with “balance” being found between the two.

Tython’s Moon, Ashla, Was A Powerful Vergence Of The Force

This superficial misinterpretation of the Force was accepted by the Je’daii Order, the ancient precursor of the Jedi Order. The Je’daii used the term Ashla for the “light side,” Bogan for the dark side, and Bendu for the “balance” between the two. Like their Jedi successors, the Je’daii Order was established on the Deep Core planet of Tython, whose two moons were named Ashla and Bogan, respectively.

If a Je’daii fell to the dark side, they would meditate on Bogan, and if a Je’daii was too reliant on the “light side,” they would meditate on Ashla, with each seeking “balance.” Inevitably, the Je’daii adherents of Bogan would violently oppose the Je’daii who followed Ashla, resulting in the Force Wars, which concluded with the end of the Je’daii Order and the establishment of the Jedi Order. The Jedi understood that there was no “light side,” there was only the Force in a state of balance and an unnatural corruption of it – the dark side.

18,883 years after the Force Wars, 12 exiled former Jedi who had fallen to the dark side would establish the Sith Order on the Outer Rim planet of Korriban.

Ashla Is Officially Star Wars Canon As Of 2021

A stone construction in Tython

Although Ahch-To has replaced Tython as the planet where the Jedi Order was founded in the modern Star Wars canon, Tython still has a counterpart in the newer timeline. Like its original Legends-era counterpart, the modern canon’s version of Tython has two moons, with one being named Ashla. As revealed in Cavan Scott’s 2021 novel The High Republic: The Rising Storm, Ashla was still used by Jedi for deep meditation in solitude in Star Wars canon, as demonstrated by the Jedi Master Elzar Mann.
