The beloved action franchise continues to grow with the announcement of a TV sequel, John Wick: Under the High Table. The John Wick franchise began with the release of the 2014 eponymous film, and follows the ex-hit man (Keanu Reeves) as he is drawn back into the criminal underworld to exact revenge. Through various sequels and spinoffs, the simple-but-effective action franchise has grown into a blockbuster cinematic phenomenon thanks to slick direction and the starpower of Reeves. Though John Wick reigns supreme in the cinema, spinoff shows like The Continental prove that the series works on the small screen too.

Following John Wick’s “death” at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, anticipation has never been higher for the next installment in the linear storyline. Spinoffs like Ballerina and the as-yet-unnamed Caine movie are taking the franchise in new directions, but aren’t progressing the story beyond John Wick 4. Now, John Wick: Under the High Table will continue the story after the fourth chapter, though it will center on new characters who try to take on the titular criminal enterprise. The Sequel Show Is Formally Announced

Months after it was revealed that another John Wick show was in the works, the latest news confirms the project as John Wick: Under the High Table. The upcoming TV series is devised as a direct sequel to the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, and the pilot episode will be helmed by the franchise’s stalwart director, Chad Stahelski. Both Stahelski and Keanu Reeves will serve as executive producers on the project, though the latter will not be taking an onscreen role. Under the High Table joins Ballerina and the untitled Caine spinoff in the ever expanding John Wick mythos.

Though it took until August 2024 for specific details to be revealed, the first rumblings of what would eventually become John Wick: Under the High Table began in November 2023. As reported by Collider, franchise director Chad Stahelski announced that plans were in place for another John Wick series, though he was very tight-lipped about specific details. Now that the project is fully revealed, Under the High Table is currently seeking a streaming home, though the overwhelming popularity of John Wick should make it an easy sell.

Reeves Is Co-Producing The New Series

Unfortunately, it seems as if Keanu Reeves’ days as the star of the John Wick movies has come to an end with his character’s death in Chapter 4. Though the actor has reported that he would return if the story is right, Stahelski and company have made it clear that Reeves’ participation in John Wick: Under the High Table will be strictly behind-the-scenes. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the show needs to write him out completely, and it could even feature a few teases about the future of the character.

With John Wick out of the picture (at least for now), John Wick: Under the High Table will be introducing a new cast of characters. These unknown figures are going to go head-on against the criminal enterprise known as The High Table, and attempt to bring it down. This will be no easy feat since The High Table is the ultimate authority over the criminal world, and is essentially the policing body that oversees all unlawful groups.

The attempted dissolution of such a powerful entity could have lasting impacts on the entire franchise, and though they are evil, The High Table does keep order among the various outlaw outfits. Unlike The Continental which explored the past, John Wick: Under the High Table has the chance to alter the trajectory of the fictional world of John Wick, and could impact future installments like the much-anticipated John Wick 5.
