Sam Raimi-Produced Alligator Horror Movie With 84% RT Score Getting Sequel Five Years Later

Crawl will officially be getting a sequel. The 2019 movie, which was produced by Sam Raimi, was set in Florida and followed a young woman (Kaya Scodelario) who became trapped in a flooded basement with a hungry alligator while trying to rescue her father (Barry Pepper) during a hurricane. Talk of a sequel has occurred since 2021, when director Alexandre Aja shared that a screenplay for the project was in the works, but no word came on the possible Crawl2 for several more years.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Crawl2 is in development at Paramount Pictures with an eye on shooting in Europe in Fall 2024. Alexandre Aja is set to return as director, helming a screenplay by Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension‘s Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan that will follow a new storyline set in New York City, centering on new main characters. Aja will also be producing, alongside returning producers Craig Flores and Sam Raimi.

Crawl Is Ripe For A Sequel

Although the studio has not leaped at the opportunity to produce a sequel to Crawl in several years, this may be because the Alexandre Aja horror movie premiered shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down movie production on a global scale. By any metric, it would otherwise be a good candidate for a franchise, as it has been successful in multiple areas both in its initial release and the intervening years. This includes grossing $91 million against its roughly $15 million budget, making it the 81st highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide.

The movie replicated its success with audiences four years later when it debuted on Netflix, charting at No. 8 on the streaming platform’s worldwide Top 10 with 4.2 million viewing hours. In addition to its commercial success, it has performed well critically, earning a Certified Fresh score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes out of 213 different Crawl reviews. Audiences have scored the creature feature nearly as highly, giving it an overall user rating of 75%.

Although significantly more than half a decade will have passed by the time the sequel to Crawl premieres, it is possible that it could be a similar success and finally launch a proper franchise. Although there may not be any returning characters, the return of the core survival horror premise could very well be enough to keep returning audiences hooked. This was the same principle that helped propel successful sequels that were otherwise largely unrelated to the originals, such as 47 Meters Down: Uncaged and The Strangers: Prey at Night.
