The voice actor behind Geralt has revealed he will star in The Witcher 4, but he will not be the lead character.

CD Projekt officially kicked off production on The Witcher 4 this year, which was originally announced via a logo in 2022.

Aside from the fact it will be the first in a new trilogy of games, little else is known about the project. At this point, it’s even unknown if it will actually be called ‘The Witcher 4’, with CD Projekt giving it the codename Polaris.

Doug Cockle, who voices protagonist Geralt in the original trilogy, has now confirmed the character will be involved in some capacity, although not as the lead.

‘Witcher 4 has been announced, I can’t say anything about it,’ Cockle said in an interview with Fall Damage, where he tries to recall classic lines from the series.

‘What we know is Geralt will be part of the game, we just don’t know how much. And the game won’t focus on Geralt, so it’s not about him this time. We don’t know who it’s about.’

Cockle said he hasn’t seen a script for Polaris yet, but clarified that he couldn’t actually say if he had or not anyway. ‘This is the thing, so I could be lying through my teeth,’ he said. ‘But I’m not. Or am I?’

While it was assumed Geralt would be involved in some capacity, as such a key part of the franchise, this is the first time we’ve had confirmation of his inclusion.

The big question is who will be the central focus of the story. Many fans are hoping Ciri will take the lead role, who (spoilers) becomes a witcher in one of the endings to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, so it makes sense if CD Projekt decides to commit to one of that story’s outcomes.

The only detail we have to go off is the lynx medallion seen in the logo reveal, which led some to believe this ‘new saga’ will involve a new cast of characters. The inclusion of Geralt though, in some capacity at least, suggests it will have stronger ties to the original trilogy.

Along with Polaris, CD Projekt is working on a spin-off Witcher game titled Project Sirius, a follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077 codenamed Orion, and a new IP codenamed Hadar.

The studio entered full production on The Witcher 4 in the second half of 2024, so it will likely be a few years before the final product comes out.
