Superman actor David Corenswet got injured while filming the Apple TV+ mystery series Lady in the Lake. Based on the best-selling novel by Laura Lippman, and adapted for TV by Alma Har’el, the seven-episode thriller stars Natalie Portman as a discontented housewife in 1960s Baltimore who investigates two separate murders. Corenswet heavily recurs as Allan Durst, who has a past with Portman’s character. Durst appears in a pivotal dream sequence during Lady in the Lake episode 6, which Har’el directed.

In comments to TVLine, Har’el opened up about Corenswet’s injury while filming the dream dance sequence. Har’el, who also directed the film Honey Boy, sheds light on how the injury happened, detailing how the show worked around it by using a body double, and makes reference to Corenswet’s upcoming turn as the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman. Read the quote below:

We rehearsed it so much, and we were incredibly worried about him falling down the stairs and hurting himself. He went to get coffee, crashed down the other stairs [and injured his shoulder.]

He was a hero about it… They [Corenswet and his dance double] kind of look the same, and we’re going to use him. We’ll take the costume from David, we’ll put it on him. And as we say it, we look, we see the paramedics just cut the shift open off of David’s body. That was a day to remember.

Half of the footage you see is David dancing from a few angles that were recorded earlier, and then half of it is the dancer after we lost David that day. [He’s] now very well. He’s doing really well. He’s going to fly in the sky.

Lady In The Lake Continues Corenswet’s Interesting Pre-Superman Streak

The Actor Has Had A Villainous Run

Lady in the Lake‘s casting is notable for continuing Corenswet’s pre-Superman streak, where some of his most visible recent roles have him playing characters that either lean or fall completely on the villainous side of the spectrum. The actor’s character in the Apple TV+ mystery has him squaring off against Portman’s protagonist. Flashbacks reveal that, during their time together in the past, Allan Durst was far from an ideal boyfriend.

Corenswet also has an outright villainous role in the Lee Isaac Chung movie Twisters. Although it’s a relatively minor supporting part, compared to the screentime of leads Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, Corenswet’s presence is almost comical in its villainy. His character, named Scott, gets progressively more antagonistic each time he’s on-screen as he works against the protagonists. By his last scene, Scott is covered in excrement and fuming.

Corenswet does have a more traditional leading man role in the Hulu romantic drama movie
The Greatest Hits.

Although his character in Pearl is definitely a victim, he’s also depicted as being potentially nefarious in a way that’s quite unlike Clark Kent. It’s likely an unintentional streak, as it does build familiarity for Corenswet with high-profile and relatively minor roles before he steps into the spotlight with Superman. As a bonus, as well, Lady in the Lake has given the chance for the rising star to work with acclaimed writers and directors — even with an injury along the way.
