The Night Agent Season 2 Is Avoiding A Jack Ryan & Reacher Mistake That Always Bothered Me

Moving into their second season, Reacher and Jack Ryan made a similar storytelling mistake. However, surprisingly, despite sharing many similarities with the two acclaimed Prime Video thriller shows, Netflix’s The Night Agent is not repeating one of their most disappointing story changes. Amazon’s live-action adaptation of Tom Clancy’s “Ryanverse” first started in August 2018 when Jack Ryan season 1 landed on the streamer. Both critically and commercially, the political spy thriller instantly performed well, paving the way for three subsequent seasons.

Although Jack Ryan season 5 will never happen, Amazon has continued its success in the genre by releasing another gripping crime thriller, Reacher, based on Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books. So far, Reacher has seemingly performed even better than Jack Ryan, making it the Tom Clancy series’ perfect replacement. While Reacher‘s popularity and acclaim have been growing from strength to strength, a Netflix show of the same genre, The Night Agent, has also been rising in the ranks. Its critical scores may not be as high as Reacher‘s, but The Night Agent avoids one character issue that Reacher could not.

The Night Agent Season 2 Is Bringing Back Rose As Peter’s Love Interest

Rose’s Return Makes The Night Agent Different From Many Similar Shows

Several cast members from The Night Agent season 1 will reprise their respective roles in the show’s second installment. However, Luciane Buchanan’s return as Rose in The Night Agent season 2 is more interesting than the others because season 1 portrays her as Peter Sutherland’s love interest. Since Peter and Rose are still together towards the end of The Night Agent season 1 after they spend the entire season running for their lives, it should not be surprising that season 2 is marking her return.

However, the return of the main character’s love interest in subsequent seasons is apparently not a common trend in the action thriller genre. Usually, in spy thrillers like The Night Agent, the main character’s love interest either fades into the background by becoming a side character or abruptly disappears as the show heads into a new story arc. I am sure The Night Agent season 2 will also raise the stakes for Peter by introducing new threats. However, it is still drifting away from the norm by ensuring that Rose remains his romantic interest.

Jack Ryan & Reacher Both Ignored Season 1’s Love Interests In Season 2

While Reacher Season 2 Completely Ignores Roscoe Conklin, Jack Ryan Season 2 Tries To Justify Cathy Mueller’s Absence

Unlike The Night Agent season 2, the second installments of both Jack Ryan and Reacher seemingly followed the norm by not featuring their titular characters’ love interests from season 1. Despite introducing Abbie Cornish’s Cathy Mueller as Jack Ryan’s romantic partner in season 1 and making her a crucial player in the titular character’s central mission, the Amazon series avoids featuring her in seasons 2 and 3. Being close to Jack Ryan puts her life in danger in season 1, explaining why the main character keeps her away from his missions in seasons 2 and 3.

By featuring Cathy in season 4, Jack Ryan also updates audiences on the titular character’s relationship with his season 1 love interest instead of completely ignoring her until the end of its runtime. Since Amazon’s Reacher accurately adapts a new Lee Child novel with each season, all new seasons of the series unfold in a completely different setting, where Jack Reacher finds himself surrounded by a new set of characters. Owing to this, Reacher season 2 also does not feature Jack Reacher‘s season 1 love interest, Roscoe, and, instead, replaces her with someone else.

Owing to this, since Rose accompanies Peter almost throughout his season 1 journey and actively helps him during several stages of the central investigation, she will likely play a similar role in The Night Agent season 2. While there is a slight possibility that Rose will appear in a smaller capacity in The Night Agent season 2, her return already prevents the Netflix series from repeating Reacher and Jack Ryan‘s biggest character problem.
