A Formula One car burst into flames following a huge crash in Dutch Grand Prix practice.
American driver Logan Sargeant was forced to leap out of his burning car after suffering a scary crash at Circuit Zandvoort in Saturday’s practice run.
In wet conditions, Sargeant – who races for Williams – clipped the grass at turn four and was sent flying into the barriers.
Sky Sports initially missed the crash but there was huge concern when the cameras cut to Sargeant’s battered car, with debris lying all over the track and skid marks from where the American lost control.
A red flag was immediately issued by race officials and several drivers were clearly concerned as they drove past Sargeant.
Thankfully the 23-year-old was able to clamber out of the wreckage as the car began to burst into flames.
‘Are you okay? Are you okay?’ Sargeant was asked by his Williams team over the radio.
‘I’m good,’ he replied while catching his breathe.
‘Okay, that’s all that matters,’ his team then said. ‘The car is on fire mate, the car is on fire. You need to jump out the car, jump out.’
Several fire marshals rushed onto the track to get the fire under control
‘He’s completely lost control, there’s a fire as well which will need to be taken care of pretty soon. He says he’s okay and that’s good to hear but he needs to get out that car if he hasn’t already. That is a big, big crash and the last thing you want as a driver and a team in a Saturday practice session. I would hazard a guess that Logan Sargeant is not going to be taking part in qualifying now.’
‘How on earth did that happen at that part of the track? It’s not usually a corner that tests the driver or the car. The last car I saw crash there was in F2. It’s a really strange one.’
