Rumors are flying that Rey’s upcoming Star Wars movie, thought to be titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order, is either delayed or canceled, but neither has been confirmed by Disney. New Jedi Order is one of several upcoming Star Wars movies, and it has been one of the most heavily marketed, perhaps second only to the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie. New Jedi Order is confirmed to be set 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in the Star Wars timeline, but little else is known about the story.
In fact, in interviews, Rey Skywalker actress Daisy Ridley has indicated that even she has yet to see a script, as one has yet to be written. It is perhaps because there’s currently no script and because details about New Jedi Order are sparse that this rumor has gained so much traction. However, for several reasons, rumors that New Jedi Order is delayed or canceled are currently baseless.
Lucasfilm Never Officially Confirmed When Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie Would Come Out
Arguably the most important point to dispel these rumors is that Lucasfilm never officially announced a release date for New Jedi Order. This inherently means that it cannot be ‘delayed.’ Initially, many believed it would be the first new Star Wars movie, coming out on May 22, 2026, but it’s now been confirmed that will be The Mandalorian & Grogu. Most then assumed New Jedi Order would come out on the next date Lucasfilm had loosely booked, December 18, 2026. That is, however, an assumption.

Realistically, even with a December 2026 release date (which, again, is unconfirmed; it could be 2027), there’s no reason to believe New Jedi Order is behind schedule. Assuming the December 18, 2026, date is reserved for Rey’s new movie, that still gives Lucasfilm more than 2 years to make the film. By comparison, The Rise of Skywalker began filming on August 1, 2018, and the movie was released on December 16, 2019.

As The Acolyte’s cancelation in particular made clear, there are many who want to see Star Wars projects they didn’t enjoy fail. There were actually online celebrations in some portions of the fanbase when the show was canceled, which is a real shame. The Star Wars sequel trilogy was extremely divisive, and some parts of the fanbase clearly want to see characters like Rey sidelined. You’d expect “fans” of Star Wars to want the franchise to succeed, even if not every project appeals to every viewer, but that is clearly not the case.
Meanwhile, there is also concern among those who want to see New Jedi Order succeed – especially because Lucasfilm has developed a reputation for behind-the-scenes drama and cancelations. Their worries could be inadvertently bolstering the rumors as well. Nevertheless, at this point, there is simply no reason to believe Star Wars: New Jedi Order is canceled.
