‘Nintendo Switch 2 could be revealed tomorrow and my body is ready’

An annoucement is brewing (Nintendo)

A Reader’s Feature argues that a Nintendo Switch 2 reveal in October is almost certain and not just because of the recent leaks.

Ever since the PlayStation 5 State of Play last week, there’s been an excitement in the air that we haven’t seen in gaming for a long time. We got a glimpse again, of how things used to be, when companies just made proper video games, told you about them a year before they came out, and didn’t want you to give up your entire life and bank balance to play them. Maybe it’s a blip or maybe Sony has seen sense at last, I don’t know. But it’s not actually them I’m most excited for at the moment.

I’ve owned PlayStation and Xbox consoles before, but my first love of gaming will always be Nintendo. No one’s games and hardware has given more entertainment and a greater sense of wonder than Nintendo. From Zelda: A Link To The Past on the SNES to Super Mario Bros. Wonder on the Switch they’ve been in the business so long it’s literally impossible to beat their track record at this point.

The Switch may be their best console yet, which is saying something considering how long Nintendo has been around, and now we’re at the point where its replacement is going to be announced. Assuming this feature gets run at the weekend then it could be as early as this Monday, judging by the rumours so far… and the feeling in my gut.

Nintendo has said they’ll announce the Switch 2 before April but I don’t think anyone thinks they’re going to wait till March 31 to do it. I would’ve bet on January or February before but there’s been so much talk of a reveal this year, pointing towards early October, that I’ve begun to believe it.

Perhaps it’s just wishful thinking but the basic design already seems to have leaked, and Nintendo must know that the longer they leave it the more the chance that the final version will leak from the Chinese factories where it’s being made.

It has to be made months in advance, obviously, so at this moment in time there are lots of people with a limited understand of NDAs (and just how vicious Nintendo lawyers are) who know exactly what the Switch 2 is and at some point soon they’re going to post a pic of it online.

This is what leads me to think an October reveal is happening. It’s not a question of not wanting to put people of from buying a Switch a Christmas, it’s that if they wait until January then poor quality photos of it are going to be everywhere and because there’ll be no context or explanation people are bound to make all sorts of wrong assumptions about it – especially in terms of its power.

Nintendo has to announce it now or otherwise they’ll lose the initiative. It’s not like PS5 Pro, because the tech specs for that leaked out months beforehand and at the end of the day it’s just a PlayStation 5 with some lines drawn on it. By comparison, we have no idea what the Switch 2 is or what it does.

The leaks suggest it’s just the current Switch upgraded, but who knows? Maybe it does more things that we’re not aware of. Or maybe the photos are fakes after all and the Switch 2 actually looks like a sponge with controllers sicking out of it, or whatever. (Personally, I don’t think it is a fake, because too many reliable sources have said it’s real, or at least an early version of what’s real.)

So, if this goes out on Sunday consider this: the Switch 2 could be unveiled in less than 24 hours. And if it’s not it’s probably going to be within the next 24 days. I am excited, not just because I love Nintendo but because I love gaming and it’s been nothing but bad – properly depressingly bad – news all year and now we’re on the cusp of some good news that should cheer everyone up.
