Max Allegri has been tipped for a return to former club AC Milan by his managerial mentor Giovanni Galeone, despite links with the Manchester United job.

The 57-year-old has been without a club since leaving Juventus for the second time at the end of last season.

Given that Allegri has won six Serie A titles and been to two Champions League finals, it is no surprise that his name has been linked with big jobs.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is under incredible pressure at Old Trafford and potential replacements are being considered.

Allegri is among the contenders – although not considered one of the favourites – but his old manager and mentor thinks a return to AC Milan could be on the cards for him.

‘Max won straight away in Milan as soon as he became Rossoneri coach,’ Galeone told TuttoMercato.

‘His return to the current Milan side would be perfect for the strong technical qualities that they have. They have strong individuals in attack and Max would bring solidity to the defence.

‘If he were to receive an offer from [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, I think he would accept it, without a doubt.’

AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca only took the job over the summer but his job is reportedly already under threat.

The Italian giants have picked up 11 points from their first seven Serie A games of the season and have suffered back-to-back Champions League defeats to Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen.

After consecutive defeats, AC Milan return from the international break with a home game against Udinese on 19 October.
