A modder has made a gaming PC case shaped like an old radio box. After some 3D modelling and printing, plus a nice paint job, the result speaks for itself.
Reddit user PhotoshopReqT has shared a fantastic-looking desktop PC mod inspired by old radio sets. Whereas restorations and conversions are at the whim of the original casing, 3D printing each material allows for greater thought into the piece; from the speaker vents that act like fan filters to the functional front knobs. Everything is there for a reason.
I especially like the aged wood effect. It gives an authentic feel to the build. While the 3D printer undoubtedly simplifies the work compared to modding a real radio, the modder’s painting and crafting skills are definitely on point. If I hadn’t watched the build video – found below, I would have guessed it was a real vintage set – like 21stCenturyIndustry’s build. Mind you, I am not an expert in radios. But still, this is a great result.
The attention to detail is excellent. Every knob has a purpose. From left to right, the first powers the PC, the second moves the radio frequency needle, and the third controls the volumes of two integrated speakers. That said, I think the modder missed an opportunity to add fan control to the second knob. The latter could change fan speed as the needle moves accordingly.
Though the modder didn’t share the specs of the machine inside, we can see that the motherboard is an Asus Z170I Pro Gaming supporting Intel’s 6th-Gen Skylake processors and DDR4 memory. The GPU seems to be one of those low to mid-range models, of which my guess would be a GTX 1050 Ti, with power fed by a Gigabyte P750GM PSU.
This mod took about three weeks to finish, from modelling to 3D printing, painting, and building. The user said that they made the 3D model in Autodesk 3ds Max, in case you want to try something similar. 3D printers have come a long way, especially in pricing, making such projects possible to a wider audience.
