Robert Pattinson’s New Sci-Fi Movie Delayed Again (But There Is A Silver Lining)

The Mickey 17 release date has been changed again. The Bong Joon-ho science-fiction comedy movie was originally slated to release on March 29, 2024, but was delayed indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, and was then rescheduled for a January 31, 2025, release. Mickey 17‘s impressive cast includes Robert Pattinson, who plays multiple versions of the titular Mickey, and also stars Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni Collette. The story is adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 science-fiction novel Mickey 7.

Per Deadline, Mickey 17 has now been rescheduled to debut in theaters on April 18, 2025. The silver lining is that Warner Bros. movies have traditionally performed well during Easter weekend in the past and the studio will have all the IMAX theaters across the globe to show Mickey 17. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s psychological thriller Companion, starring Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher, has been moved from January 10 to a January 31 release. Check out the comments from a Warner Bros. spokesperson below:

When the April 18 date became available, we quickly moved to secure it for
Mickey 17
. We’re thrilled with the new date, and very happy the film will be available to audiences in IMAX. With January 31 now available with a full IMAX footprint, we are also very happy to have
Companion
releasing on this new date.

What This Means For Mickey 17

It Has Better Box Office Prospects Now

While Mickey 17‘s release date has been changed yet again, the new release potentially sets the movie up for better box office success. Between Pattinson’s immense star power and this being Bong’s first movie since the critically acclaimed and Academy Award-winning Parasite was released in 2019, Mickey 17 has the appeal to become a box office hit. However, movies that release in late January and early February do not tend to be box office juggernauts.

Parasite
won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Ready Player One all had strong box office debuts when opening during Easter weekend. Mickey 17 has the chance to follow in their footsteps with the new release date, especially with it being available to watch the imaginative and satirical science-fiction story in IMAX theaters worldwide. Based on the first trailer and what has been teased so far, Mickey 17 will be a strange science-fiction movie that is best experienced in theaters, preferably in IMAX.

Our Take On Mickey 17’s New Release Date

It Is Likely For The Best

Mickey 17 has been one of my most anticipated movies since it was first announced, and my enthusiasm only escalated after seeing the first trailer. While I am disappointed that the release date has been delayed again, this change does seem to be in the movie’s best interest. It has the potential to be another one of Robert Pattinson’s best movies since Twilight, with Mickey 17 being one of his weirdest and most memorable roles yet that will be worth the wait to see in theaters.

Adapted from the novel by Edward Ashton, Mickey 7 is a Sci-Fi film that follows Mickey 17 (Robert Pattinson) and his journey to the ice world Niflheim to colonize the planet. Mickey 17 is an “expendable” employee to be used and thrown away after completing their task – often a dangerous one – but when one iteration of Mickey dies, he is reborn in a new body with a large portion of his memories still intact. After six deaths, however, Mickey finally begins to understand the job and why it was always an unfilled position.
