Terrifier 3 Box Office Climbs 2024’s Highest-Grossing Movies List While Just M Behind Joker 2’s Spot

Terrifier 3 ascends further still at the box office, earning a spot on an impressive 2024 chart and nearly surpassing Joker: Folie à Deux. Directed once again by Damien Leone, the third installment in the Terrifier franchise puts Art the Clown’s ongoing rampage during the holiday season, following the demonic clown as he torments the residents of Miles County on Christmas Eve. Terrifier 3‘s box office has been impressive from its theatrical release on October 11, and the horror movie only continues to climb.

Now, Collider reports that Terrifier 3 has grossed $53 million in North America, putting it on the list of the top 30 highest-grossing movies domestically in 2024. With $16 million grossed internationally, the horror movie, which was made for only $2 million, has now grossed a staggering worldwide total of just under $70 million.

Terrifier 3‘s domestic total is now only about $5 million shy of Joker: Folie à Deux‘s domestic gross of $58 million, though the DC flick, which has been a box office disaster overall, does still reign supreme internationally with a gross of $206 million.

What Terrifier 3’s New Box Office Milestone Means For The Franchise

Will Art The Clown’s Next Outing Get A Higher Budget?

Made on a budget of $2 million, Terrifier 3 marks the most expensive entry in the franchise, with the first and second films having been made for an estimated $35,000 and $250,000, respectively. At this budget level, the third Art the Clown outing may have been looking at a break-even point of between $4 million and $5 million, meaning it’s obviously been highly profitable. Leone, then, could continue the Terrifier franchise for another handful of movies with a reasonable expectation that each will be successful.

Every Terrifier 3 Death, Ranked By Brutality & Gore

While none of Terrifier 3’s kills are particularly pleasant, the slasher sequel’s nastiest shocks are some of the year’s most brutal moments.

Leone, however, recently clarified that, after the in-development Terrifier 4, there may only be one more movie to wrap up Art the Clown’s rampage. Though the end is approaching for the franchise, Terrifier 3‘s success could mean that the upcoming fourth movie gets made at a higher budget level. The films thus far have proven that Art doesn’t need a big budget to be an entertaining horror movie villain, but a budget of $5 million or more could potentially allow Leone to hire a bigger name actor, improve the production design, or just offer up even more extreme gore.

Our Take On Terrifier 3’s Success

The Franchise Shouldn’t Overstay Its Welcome

Though Terrifier 3‘s success suggests that there is an audience appetite for additional Art the Clown adventures, it might be for the best that Leone only plans to make one or two more movies. Terrifier 3 reviews have been generally very positive, though not quite as glowing as those for the second movie, but the franchise’s general focus on gore means there will presumably come a point where, creatively, it runs out of runway.

The main appeal of the franchise thus far is the extreme ways in which Art kills his victims, but, after the gory events of the second and third movies, this shock factor is sure to eventually diminish. That being said, this point hasn’t come just yet, and Terrifier 3‘s success bodes well for Art’s future.
