As the holiday season rolls around, many of us will be looking to take advantage of sales and deals, and McDonald’s is giving the people what they want with the launch of their new ‘gift drop’.

Fans of the fast food chain’s Monopoly game will enjoy this treasure hunt style opportunity, as customers are invited to find gift tags across the nation.

McDonald’s will be dropping gift tags everywhere, some will be hidden in plain sight on billboards and in restaurants, while others will require people to search high and low online and in real life.

Each gift tag will contain a code which is redeemable on the McDonald’s app, and earns you a prize. This includes free food, MyMcDonald’s Rewards Points, and exclusive festive merch, such as Christmas jumpers, pyjamas, and baubles.

In addition to your chance to win these goodies, you’ll also be sent two food offers instantly, one main food offer and one for breakfast the next day. 

Lots of the merch features iconic McDonald’s characters such as Grimace, with jumpers and hats that are a throwback to the 90s. 

The gift drop launches on November 20 – the same day the new Christmas menu launches across the UK, featuring the return of the Big Tasty, the new Cheesy McCrispy, and the Terry’s Chocolate Orange Pie.

You’ll have until December 19 to find the tags, but it’s worth noting there are a few rules you’ll need to follow in order to claim your prizes. For instance, only one code can be used per day, per account. If a customer attempts to enter more than one a day, they will be encouraged by the app to  try again the next day.

Customers will INSTANTLY RECEIVE 2 x food offers when they redeem a gift tag gode – there is a main food offer that will expire at 23:59 that same day, and a breakfast offer, which will expire at 10:59 the next day. These offers are different each day. Full list of food offers below:

  • w/c 20th November – 99p McMuffin
  • w/c 25th November– £1.99 McMuffin and Hash Brown
  • w/c 2nd December – 99p McMuffin
  • w/c 9th December – £1.99 McMuffin and Hash Brown

The codes are multi-use, in that as many people as desired can enter the same code into the app, meaning you can share codes with friends and family members.

However, customers cannot use a code themselves more than once – once a code is entered into an account, it cannot be entered again.

The maximum number of codes across the campaign that can be entered per person is 30.

This comes after McDonald’s celebrated its 50th birthday in the UK and revealed some fun facts about its history.

A lost menu item from the 70s came to light, which actually inspired the creation of the iconic Chicken McNuggets.

Before the chicken nuggets launched in 1984, there was something else on the menu – Onion Nuggets.

These were sold at McDonald’s from 1976 onwards, and were available in the US as well. These quite literally were chunks of onions, deep fried in a golden batter.

They were intended as a vegetarian option, for those who didn’t want to order a burger, but they weren’t a very successful product, as people preferred onion rings. Ultimately they were axed from the menu a few years later.

McDonald’s former development chef, René Arend, who joined the chain in the late 1970s, started working on chicken nuggets in 1979, when Chairman Fred Turner suggested the idea, but they didn’t launch in restaurants until the 80s. 

Despite being deemed ‘unsuccessful’ the Onion Nuggets have a strong fan base online, with many on Reddit demanding Maccies ‘bring them back’.

It’s just onion rings in nugget form.’ And u/Banjo-oz agreed, saying: ‘I think they souns pretty delicious, although they seem like the laziest onion rings ever. “Rings? Nah, just hack em into chunks and batter em!”’

While u/nando82 wrote: ‘From what I hear, these were quite good. Here’s hoping Mcdonald’s bring these onions back one day.’
