Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 3.The From season 3 finale introduces a mysterious new character credited as the Man in the Yellow Suit (Douglas E. Hughes). He appears in the final scene of From season 3’s ending and proceeds to kill Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey). Unlike the Town’s nocturnal monsters, the Man in Yellow is able to move freely during the day. He knows about Jade Herrera (David Alpay) playing the lullaby and warns that there are consequences for attaining knowledge.

The Man in Yellow solves the From mystery of whose voice was on the radio at the end of season 1, warning Jim that his wife, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno), should not be digging a hole. In addition to revealing the Man in Yellow having a presence since season 1, From season 3, episode 2 set up the Man in Yellow’s introduction in the paintings made by Victor’s mother, Miranda (Sarah Booth). Heading into From season 4, one of the major mysteries is the true identity of the Man in the Yellow, with several theories being possible.

8 The Man In Yellow Is Responsible For The Children’s Sacrifice

This Would Also Make Him Responsible For The Monsters’ Creation

From‘s monsters are revealed to have been individuals who sacrificed their children in exchange for immortality. Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) says that “it” offered them immortality. The From season 3 finale contains many game-changing revelations, but it does not reveal who or what the “it” is that Fatima references. “It” may be the Man in Yellow, who is the original source of evil in the Town that is responsible for the children’s sacrifice and the creation of the monsters.

This would effectively make the Man in Yellow the monsters’ leader. All this time, the monsters may have been doing the Man in Yellow’s bidding. Having the ability to make the monsters immortal, which is proven to be genuine through the rebirth of the Smiley monster (Jamie McGuire), demonstrates how formidable the Man in Yellow’s power is. If he is responsible for the children’s deaths and the monsters’ creation, this would add more weight to the children helping Tabitha and Jade to remember the truth.

7 The Man In Yellow Is The Boy In White’s Antithesis

They May Be Locked In An Ancient Conflict

If From‘s the Boy in White (Vox Smith) is trying to help the residents, then the Man in Yellow may be the Boy in White’s antithesis who wants to keep the residents trapped and tormented in the Town. The Boy in White and the Man in Yellow are clearly among the Town’s most powerful entities. They both make infrequent, albeit impactful appearances. The residents may be unknowingly locked in an ancient conflict between the Boy in White and the Man in Yellow.

From repeats Lost with several of its story beats. The Man in Yellow being the Boy in White’s antithesis would be reminiscent of the dynamic between Lost’s Man in Black (Titus Welliver) and Jacob (Mark Pellegrino), with the survivors on the Island caught in an ancient conflict between them. Despite initial assumptions, the conflict between Jacob and the Man in Black was more nuanced than simply a matter of good versus evil. There is a good chance that a potential relationship between the Boy in White and the Man in Yellow is similarly complex.

6 Randall Becomes The Man In Yellow

This Could Be The Payoff For Randall’s Cicada Storyline

A Reddit theory posits that Randall (A.J. Simmons) may become the Man in Yellow. Since being possessed by the Music Box Monster in season 2, Randall has been seeing and hearing hallucinations involving cicadas. The theory focuses on how cicadas often symbolize rebirth and immortality and that Randall may be reborn as the Man in Yellow. From surviving the Music Box Monster to being left to the monsters in season 3, episode 4, the series has made an effort to save Randall on multiple occasions, and is seemingly saving him for a larger role.

That larger role may be him becoming the Man in Yellow, which, according to From‘s time travel rules, he was always destined to become. There are also parallels drawn between the scar Randall has on his face after being attacked by the monsters and the scar that the Man in Black has on his face. There is even speculation that when he was left to the monsters, they did not choose to spare his life, but found themselves unable to kill him because he is somehow already the immortal Man in Yellow.

5 The Man In Yellow Is Hastur

He Could Be A Lovecraftian Villain

Instead of being an already established member of From‘s cast of characters, this Reddit theory argues that the Man in Yellow is a fictional figure known as Hastur. The character of Hastur was mentioned by fantasy horror writer H.P. Lovecraft and later expanded on by other authors. The From theory focuses on how Hastur is known as the King in Yellow, a clear link to the Man in Yellow. There is also discussion of how Hastur likes to use inescapable spaces, which fits with the Town that the residents are trapped in and are unable to escape.

The theory goes on to cover how Hastur’s minions are not mindless, as they follow rules and maintain the hierarchy that their master desires. This aligns with how From‘s monsters react, since they are not mindless creatures. They are cleverly manipulative, such as when they free the farm animals in From season 3, episode 1, or when they pretended to play dead when the paramedics encounter them. Such manipulation and strategy is described as being similar to Hastur’s minions, and may point to the Man in Yellow’s real identity.

4 The Man In Yellow Is The Keeper Of The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse Is Undeniably Important

One of the most important locations in From is the lighthouse in the forest. This Reddit theory connects the Man in Yellow to the lighthouse and discusses how he may be the keeper of the lighthouse. The theory highlights the Man in Yellow’s clothing as the type of garments that might be worn by a lighthouse keeper. Of course, the Man in Yellow would not be a lighthouse keeper in the traditional sense, but would be using it to ensure that the residents remain trapped in the Town.

The Boy in White was able to help Tabitha escape the Town in From season 2’s ending when he pushed her out of the lighthouse. The Man in Yellow may now be concerned about something like this happening again, which is why he takes action after Jade plays the lullaby by the bottle tree and remembers the past lives that he and Tabitha had in the Town. In order for all the residents to escape the Town for good, they may need to defeat the Man in Yellow and how he is using the lighthouse to keep them trapped.

3 The Man In Yellow Is Dr. Mabuse

Dr. Mabuse Is A Fictional German Character

A Reddit theory points out the word “Mabuse” being shown in the ambulance that took Tabitha back to the Town earlier in season 3. The theory breaks down how “Mabuse” may be a reference to Dr. Mabuse, a fictional character from a series of German novels and movies. According to this theory, Dr. Mabuse has many powers, including telepathy, hypnosis, demonic possession, and body transference, powers that the Man in Yellow may have as well. Perhaps more importantly, the theory discusses how Dr. Mabuse rarely commits crimes himself, but has his agents perform them instead.

If the Town’s nocturnal monsters are the Man in Yellow’s agents, this dynamic sounds quite familiar. Dr. Mabuse also has more than one type of agent, which aligns with the various types of monsters that exist in the Town, as the Music Box Monster, the Kimono Woman (Shuoxin Fu), and other entities seem distinct from the regular nocturnal monsters. The theory clarifies that the Man in Yellow is not literally Dr. Mabuse, but that From may be drawing many elements from the fictional German character.

2 The Man In Yellow Is A 1950s Game Show Host

This Could Explain The Many 1950s Influences

Since their introduction in season 1, there has been speculation about why From‘s monsters are dressed as if they are living in the 1950s. One Reddit theory tackles this question in an unexpected way by suggesting that the Man in Yellow may be a game show host from the 1950s. The 1950s aesthetic is not only present in the monsters’ clothing, but in the design of the Town itself, with this theory arguing that this may be because the Man in Yellow designed the Town, and is nostalgic for this era.

The theory mentions that the Man in Yellow’s voice, even going back to when it was heard on the radio in season 1, sounds like that of a game show host. This being his background is also tied into the songs that seemingly play at random on the jukeboxes in the Town’s diner, with the Man in Yellow using the songs as a form of entertainment for himself and as torment for the residents. The theory also explains how hosts sometimes wore yellow because it stood out more than other colors, which could explain the character’s name and choice of clothing.

This Could Relate To Why The Voices Wanted Sara To Kill Him

This Reddit theory returns to the idea of the Man in Yellow being an already established From character with him being Ethan Matthews (Simon Webster). In season 1, Ethan was often seen wearing yellow clothes, and he has always had an unexplained connection to the Town and a deep understanding of how the mysterious location works. This may be explained by Ethan being the Man in Yellow, who is also the “storyteller” of the Town’s history.

It does not make sense for Ethan, or even Randall, to be the Man in Yellow in the series’ present-day timeline, but From may find a way to explain this in season 4.
