Barker was born in Islington to Irish and Montserrat parents. She and her sister Laura were placed in foster care shortly after their birth and were subsequently adopted. Barker grew up in London and Winchester before going to Glasgow as a child and residing there until she was a teenager. While in Glasgow, she attended the Elizabeth Murray School of Dance on weekends. She made her acting debut in an RBS advertisement.

Barker and her mother and stepmother moved to the village of Church Fenton in the Selby District of Yorkshire when her parents split. She attended Tadcaster Grammar School, which was close by. Barker planned to study International Relations at the London School of Economics after taking a year off. Still, she changed her mind and is now majoring in Drama. While working at the National Railway Museum, she was involved in the York theatrical scene.

Career

Barker played Mercy and Titivillus in the National Centre for Early Music’s 2015 Mankind production. An agency swiftly signed her after being cast as Mary in the 2016 York Mystery Plays by Royal Shakespeare Company director Phillip Breen. Barker subsequently found her way to the small screen, first starring as the recurring character Daisie in the fifth season of the CBBC teenage fantasy series Wolfblood. In 2018, Barker played Private Sarah Findlay in Sheffield Theatres’ production of Of Close Quarters.
