In 1988, after graduating from Harvard Business School, Johnson joined Fidelity Investments, which her grandfather Edward Johnson II had founded in 1946 and of which her father Edward Johnson III was then CEO. She began her career as a portfolio manager and analyst.
Johnson was elevated to president of Fidelity Asset Management in 2001. During her tenure, Johnson unsuccessfully attempted to organize a referendum to remove her father from his position as CEO due to disagreements with his business decisions. Johnson was promoted to head of Retail, Workplace, and Institutional Business in 2005.
In 2012, she was appointed president. In 2014, she was appointed CEO; in 2016,, she was appointed chairman. In 2018, Johnson enabled institutional investors to trade Bitcoin and Ethereum by introducing cryptocurrency investment at Fidelity.
