Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh have admitted to becoming so lost in a sex scene that they didn’t hear anybody yell ‘cut’.
The award-winning actors, 41 and 28 respectively, are both set to star in the upcoming romance drama We Live in Time, by director John Crowley.
We Live in Time follows Andrew and Florence’s characters Almut and Tobias as a chance encounter changes the trajectory of their lives, all while being aware of how much time is left for them.
The film, which is set for release in the UK at the beginning of 2025, also incorporates elements of time travel and has been shown at recent film festivals.
After already going viral for its unintentionally hilarious poster, which featured a rather prominent carousel horse, more behind-the-scenes gossip is helping to sell the film to potential viewers.
While filming a sex scene, Andrew has admitted, he and his Oppenheimer star screen partner didn’t hear anyone yell ‘cut’ while filming a sex scene for the movie.
‘We were doing the first take of this very intimate, passionate scene,’ he told 92NY at a recent Q&A. ‘It’s a closed set, which means it’s only me and Florence and the camera operator, who’s a lovely man called Stuart.
‘And he’s very polite and very sweet and gentle. The director’s in another room next door. And so the scene becomes passionate and we get into it as it were and we go a little bit further than we were meant to.’
He continued, ‘It’s feeling safe and we just kind of… go from the next thing to the next thing and we’ll let this progress and we’ll just carry on,’ before revealing that he eventually noticed Stuart had stopped filming.
Not only had Stuart stopped filming, he’d also turned to face the wall, apparently waiting for Andrew and Florence to both realise the scene was, in fact, over.
In response to the story being shared on Instagram, Renzalisasis asked, ‘Where is the intimacy coordinator? Lol,’ while JustBzNYC098 said: ‘Wouldn’t be the first time, so many actors and actresses just click good together.’
Some wondered whether this story should be public information. LounqeAct posted an image that simply said: ‘We should all know less about each other.’
The comments come shortly after We Live in Time’s poster went viral for the goofy carousel horse that managed to sneak its way into a sweet shot of Andrew and Florence’s characters embracing.
‘The horse is killing me!’ Gilluis Pérez exclaimed on X, while user Abby H demanded a sequel featuring the new star of the show: ‘I want a film solely starring the carousel horse next.’
‘At this point the horse needs to get third billing and a renegotiated contract,’ pointed out US cinema chain Regal – and it’s not wrong.
Andrew and Florence’s characters meet after she accidentally runs him over with her car, sending them on a whirlwind experience of love, life, and loss.
