One person has died and eight others have been injured following an apartment building collapse in Istanbul, Turkey.
Images taken from across the street show people waiting to board a public bus at the time of the collapse, narrowly avoiding being struck by falling debris.
Firefighters at the scene shifted rubble by hand as they worked to pull people from the debris.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said when visiting the scene that seven people were initially pulled from the ruins of the building, including two who were severely injured.
Later, his office said one more injured person had been rescued, and a body had been recovered.
The 36-year-old structure collapsed at 8.40am on Sunday morning, the governorship has said.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear, however there was no sign of an explosion or seismic activity.
More than 59,000 people were killed last year when a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck parts of southern Turkey and neighbouring Syria.
Nearly 11 million people in Syria were also affected by the earthquake, according to the United Nations.
The apartment collapse has renewed locals’ fears of the resilience of buildings in the city that is prone to earthquakes.
The top two floors of the structure were used as residences, with the rest being occupied by businesses.
Istanbul, which is home to over 16 million people, has over 200,000 buildings that are in urgent need of improvement, the municipality has said.
