Disney reveals the first official look at Tron: Ares. Starring Jared Leto, the upcoming movie will revive the cult favorite sci-fi franchise years after Tron: Legacy attempted to do so, but didn’t become the same runaway hit as the original. In addition to Leto, the ensemble Tron: Ares cast will see the return of Jeff Bridges as original protagonist Kevin Flynn, as well as franchise newcomers Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson and Sarah Desjardins.

During the D23 Entertainment Showcase, for which Screen Rant was in attendance, Disney unveiled the first look at Tron: Ares. The footage sees Leto’s titular character heading to the real world in order to look for “something important” known as Permanence, as well as Lightcycles and Recognizers being in the real world and causing damage, including cutting cars in half, and ending on the note of Bridges’ Flynn greeting Ares in a white robe. New character details were also revealed for the threequel, with Evan Peters playing Julian Dillinger, a descendant of the original movie’s villain, and Greta Lee playing a human named Eve Kim, who is “a programmer whose greatest work provides a path for Ares to come into the real world“.

Tron: Ares’ New Characters Could Pave The Way For More Returning Faces

In addition to an exciting tease of how The Grid will begin to merge with the real world, the details revealed about Tron: Ares‘ new characters could serve as a promising tease of how the threequel will bridge the events of previous movies. Up to this point, it was generally unclear how the new movie would connect to prior installments, particularly that of Tron: Legacy, as the first official plot description indicated that Leto’s titular character would be humanity’s first encounter with A.I. beings. Given the 2010 sequel ended with Olivia Wilde’s Quorra now living in the real world, Ares seemingly was retconning the prior movie.

8 Important Reveals From TRON: Ares’ First Look Photo

TRON: Ares has just revealed a first look at Jared Leto’s titular character, and here are eight major details that the image reveals about the film.

Now that it’s been revealed that Peters will be playing another Dillinger family member in Tron: Ares, this could be leaving the door open for more returning faces to be secretly returning in the threequel. Beyond Quorra and Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn, a notable option for a returning character would be Cillian Murphy’s Edward Dillinger Jr., the son of the original movie’s protagonist. Given Murphy’s recent surge in popularity thanks to the likes of A Quiet Place Part II and Oppenheimer, Disney may look to capitalize on this success, even if with a secret cameo.

That being said, Quorra and Sam may be the most likely returning characters for Tron: Ares that have yet to be revealed. The fact that Bridges is reprising his role as Kevin Flynn for the threequel and is greeting Leto’s titular character despite his apparent Legacy demise could set up Sam to return to try and save his father from The Grid, or having already done so and brought him back to the real world. This, in turn, could see Flynn giving Ares a path to a better life by introducing him to Quorra and showing the life she’s built for herself since leaving The Grid.
