Summary

  • Nine Inch Nails will score Tron: Ares, taking over from Daft Punk, adding a new dystopian feel to the highly anticipated film.
  • Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have become acclaimed composers, winning Oscars for their work on films like The Social Network.
  • The star-studded cast, including Jared Leto and Jeff Bridges, sets up Tron: Ares to be one of the best movies of 2025.

The upcoming movie Tron: Ares starring Jared Leto will have a fantastic score from Nine Inch Nails. The long-awaited follow-up to 2010’s Tron: Legacy is finally in the works at Disney after years of speculation about the future of the franchise. The Tron: Ares ensemble cast will see the return of Jeff Bridges as the original protagonist Kevin Flynn and will also feature performances by Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, and Sarah Desjardins. There is no confirmed release date as of the time of writing.

Screen Rant was in attendance at the D23 Entertainment Showcase where Disney revealed the first glimpse of the highlight anticipated Tron: Ares. Leto will star as the titular protagonist in Tron: Ares, which is directed by Joachim Rønning and written by Jack Thorne and Jesse Wigutow. The film is set to be released on October 10, 2025. It will mar the third installment of the Tron franchise after the original film was released back in 1982, which starred Jeff Bridges. With a phenomenal cast and promising early-look footage, Tron: Ares already looks to be one of the best movies of 2025.

Nine Inch Nails Is Doing Tron: Ares’ Music Instead Of Daft Punk

Daft Punk, the renowned French electronic duo who has made classic hits such as “One More Time”, “Get Lucky”, “Instant Crush”, and “Harder Better Faster Stronger”, will not be doing the score of Tron: Ares. This has been known for quite a while as Daft Punk has already made it clear that they were not interested in returning to the Tron franchise after providing the musical score for Tron: Legacy, which was arguably the greatest thing to come out of that entire production. Daft Punk’s Tron: Legacy soundtrack in 2010 was their first album since 2005’s Human After All.

While Daft Punk has made one additional album since Tron: Legacy, their celebrated 2013 album Random Access Memories, they have not released new music since. They even recently declined to perform at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, where several other French native musical acts performed such as Phoenix and Gojira. Instead of Daft Punk, Nine Inch Nails announced their reunion for the Tron: Ares soundtrack. Nine Inch Nails started back in 1988, gained prominence throughout the 1990s and the 2000s, and hasn’t performed together since a brief tour in 2022.

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross Have Become Excellent Composers For Movies

The Oscar-winning composers did music on The Social Network, Gone Girl, & more

Trent Reznor, who is the frontman and mastermind behind Nien Inch Nails, emerged as a composer with Atticus Ross on David Fincher’s legendary film The Social Network. This inspired a slew of collaborations between Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and David Fincher, which led to them scoring Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. Reznor and Ross won the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score for their work on The Social Network, which cemented their creative partnership and their prestige as movie composers ever since.

Reznor and Ross have also composed the original musical score for the HBO limited series Watchmen, which earned them an Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited Series, Movie or Special. They have also created the musical scores for Before The Flood, Patriots Day, Mid90s, Bird Box, Waves, Mank, and Soul, which earned them a second Academy Award. They also composed the musical scores for Bones and All, Empire of Light, The Killer, and Challengers, making them two of the most in-demand composers in Hollywood. Ross is not a member of NIN but is expected to be a part of the Tron: Ares soundtrack.

Nine Inch Nails Can Reinvent The Sound Of Tron: Ares

Just like how Daft Punk put their unique and celebrated style on Tron: Legacy, Nine Inch Nails can now put their stamp on Tron: Ares. It’s clearly one of the biggest selling points of the upcoming movie considering the big announcement reveal made at D23 2024. With Nine Inch Nails involved, rather than just the traditional collaboration between Reznor and Ross, there is the potential and expectation for new music from the band to be featured exclusively in the upcoming Tron movie, which hasn’t happened since 2020. Nine Inch Nails, known for their classic hits like “Closer”, “The Hand That Feeds”, and “Head Like a Hole”, has a fitting dystopian feel that will be perfect for Tron: Ares.
