The woman claiming to be the inspiration behind the stalker featured in Netflix’s Baby Reindeer has officially launched legal action against the streaming giant. Touted as the true story of comedian Richard Gadd’s alleged experience with an obsessed stalker who sent over 41,000 emails and hundreds of voice messages, Gadd initially attempted to obscure the true identities of the people involved by using pseudonyms. Following the show’s release, however, Scottish woman Fiona Harvey identified herself as the basis of Baby Reindeer’s Martha Scott, publicly refuting many of the claims made by the show.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Harvey has officially filed a defamation lawsuit in California’s federal court this Thursday. In the lawsuit, Harvey claims that Netflix and the Baby Reindeer showrunners told these lies, and never stopped, because it was a better story than the truth, and better stories made money.” The suit is seeking injunctive relief of at least $120 million and brings claims for defamation, negligence and violations of right of publicity law. Check out some of the allegations made in Harvey’s complaint:

It never investigated whether Harvey was convicted, a very serious misrepresentation of the facts. It did nothing to understand the relationship between Gadd and Harvey, if any. It did nothing to determine whether other facts, including an assault, the alleged stalking or the conviction was accurate.

Baby Reindeer’s New Lawsuit Will Only Bring More Attention To A Complex Issue

Many People Have Debated The Ethics Involved In Telling Gadd’s Story

When Baby Reindeer first premiered back in April, it was suggested by Gadd that “we’ve gone to such lengths to disguise [the real-life Martha] that I doubt she would recognize herself in the show.” However, following the show’s initial success, internet sleuths almost immediately began searching for the real-life inspirations behind Martha and other Baby Reindeer characters, such as Tom Goodman-Hill’s Darrien and Nava Mau’s Teri. While both Netflix and Gadd would subsequently plead for fans to avoid seeking out the real people, Harvey would later choose to publicly identify herself via a controversial interview on Piers Morgan’s YouTube channel.

The cast of the Netflix stalker show Baby Reindeer features a variety of up-and-coming international stars, including the show’s creator.

Since then, the attention generated by the initial show and Harvey’s subsequent interview has generated considerable public interest and passionate conversations about several serious issues, including stalking, mental health, and sexual assault. While some commentators may appear divided about the impact Netflix’s show may have on the people it allegedly represents, there is little question that the controversy surrounding the show’s release only seems to be intensifying following Harvey going public to refute the show’s depiction of the character she claims was based on herself.

Now that Harvey has officially launched legal action, online conversations surrounding the case and its ethical implications are only bound to become more prevalent. Hopefully, however, as interested viewers and casual commentators continue to weigh in on the unfolding drama, the inherent complexities of the themes at play in the original show will not be lost to blatant sensationalism. Regardless of Baby Reindeer’s ongoing legal quandaries, as a piece of television, it still draws attention to several key issues worthy of nuanced exploration and a greater sense of public awareness.
