Barcelona have told Manchester United they will not meet their €60 million (£51.3m) asking price for Mason Greenwood, according to reports in Spain.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan after United allowed the 22-year-old to leave Old Trafford in the final hour of last summer’s transfer window.

The forward has not played for United since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February and United had considered reintegrating him back into Erik ten Hag’s squad before the club received major backlash over his return.

Earlier this week, United’s football director, John Murtough, and head of director of football negotiations, Matt Hargreaves, met with Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, and two CAA Base agents, Frank Tramboli and Fede Massai, in Barcelona.

According to Mundo Deportivo, United held talks over a potential deal for Greenwood and wanted to gauge Barcelona’s interest.

However, the report claims that Barcelona have made it clear that they will not meet United’s valuation, with the Premier League seeking a fee between €40m (£34.2m) and €60m (£51.3m).

It’s understood that United’s asking price is outside of Barcelona’s budget, though the Spanish champions have been keeping tabs on Greenwood’s progress at Getafe.

United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has already left the door open for Greenwood’s return and has said a new decision will be made over the forward’s future.
