BBC have planned a special tribute to Dr Michael Mosley one month after his tragic death.

On Friday July 12, presenters and audiences of the organisation will be asked to do something in memory of the TV and radio doctor, for ‘Just One Thing Day’.

The name derives from his BBC Radio 4 podcast, Just One Thing, where each episode focused on one thing that listeners could do to improve their health and wellbeing. On his popular show, he made the advice simple to understand, but it was always backed up with scientific reasoning.

On BBC Radio 4, the Today show will welcome contributions from those who changed their lives as a result of Mosley’s tips.

Anita Rani will then reflect on the impact Michael has had on her own life with a focus on the benefits of exercise during Woman’s Hour. On the PM programme, Evan Davies will be experimenting with using a cold shower to wake up. Mosley often put health practises to the test himself.

While The Food Programme will revisit previous Just One Thing topics including oily fish and turmeric.

To round off the coverage on the station, On Front Row will celebrate how listening to music or playing an instrument can bring a sense of calm.

Other BBC shows will also celebrate Mosley’s positive impact. Radio 2’s Tina Daheley and 6 Music’s Craig Charles will both get involved to improve their own wellbeing and BBC Radio 1 will mark the day too.

Mosley was a regular contributor on TV shows Morning Live and The One Show, and they will also be joining in.

Mohit Bakaya, Director of Speech and Controller of BBC Radio 4 and 4 Extra, said: ‘Michael’s broadcasting changed people’s lives. His Radio 4 podcast inspired so many to take up small, everyday things to improve their health and well-being.

‘So we thought it would be fitting to dedicate a day to the impact he had on people’s lives and celebrate his legacy within broadcasting and beyond,’ he explained.

‘He was a hugely well-liked and widely admired colleague within radio and TV, so it is no surprise that so many programmes across the BBC have been keen to share their support for Michael as part of Just One Thing Day.

‘I hope audiences will be similarly inspired to join us to do “Just One Thing” in memory of Michael.’

Mosley died aged 67 after he disappeared while on holiday in Symi, Greece in June. He left his Dr Clare Bailey Mosley and friends at Agios Nikolaos beach on Wednesday June 5 around 1.30pm, when he appeared to have undertaken an ‘incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen’ by rescue teams. He was discovered dead days later.

An initial examination by a coroner ruled out foul play, and it was later claimed that his time of death could have been around 4pm on Wednesday, just hours after leaving Clare, and that he died of natural causes.

Clare described the loss as ‘devastating’. ‘I don’t know quite where to begin with this. It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband. We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together,’ she said in a heartbreaking statement.

‘I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days. My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world.

‘It’s clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you. We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team. Michael was an adventurous man, it’s part of what made him so special.’

Mosley was a British journalist, TV presenter and producer. Some of his most notable documentaries include 2012’s The Truth About Exercise, The Genius of Invention released in 2013, and more recently, the three-part 2021 docuseries Lose a Stone In 21 Days for Channel 4. He also fronted the documentary Who Made Britain Fat? and was known for popularising the 5:2 diet.

Just One Thing Day takes place across the BBC on Friday 12th July. Box sets of Just One Thing are available in full on BBC Sounds.
