Dragon’s Dogma 2 features a wonderful variety of outfits, weapons, and armors for you to buy and equip — not only on yourself, but also on your primary Pawn. Ensuring you’re staying up to date on your equipment, both in its initial quality and its Enhancement level, is critical to remaining a threat on the battlefield.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: The Caged Magistrate Walkthrough
The Caged Magistrate is an early main story quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and it can be difficult to complete without guidance.
While you are able to buy steadily improved gear at each town you naturally progress toward, there’s a location where you’ll be able to jump quite a bit ahead in order outfit yourself in the best weapons and armor for your early hours in the game. This guide will detail how to reach the location, as well as detail out the inventory available from this specific merchant.
Updated by Jeff Brooks on April 1, 2024: this guide has been updated to include a fantastic weapon to grab in the early game if you’re interested in the Mystic Spearhand Vocation — one of the best Vocations in the game. Previously, this guide covered the best early game weapons and armor for the four core Vocations, as well as some great gear for Warriors and Sorcerers, but no weaponry for Mystic Spearhand. The newest section details where to find a great duospear called Infernal Edge, which will carry you well into the mid-game (and maybe even a bit further).
Make Your Way To Vernworth
Vernworth is the capital of Vermund, where you’ll be spending many early (and later) hours in the game. You’ll want to make your way from Borderwatch Outpost to Melve, another critical town in your Dragon’s Dogma 2 journey. Once you’ve settled business at Melve for the time being, you’ll then want to begin your hike toward Vernworth. Eventually, you’ll unlock the Oxcart, and you’ll want to take it to speed along your journey.
The oxcart is one of the few but very welcome methods of fast travel in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Travel To Checkpoint Rest Town
After arriving in Vernworth, you’ll meet with Captain Brant briefly, and then, after that, you’ll be able to travel freely throughout Vernworth. You’ll want to spend a lot of time in Vernworth moving forward, as this is a major hub in Dragon’s Dogma 2, but for the purposes of acquiring the best gear for this point in the game, you’ll want to head to the northwest gate of the city.
Specifically, you’re looking for the West Vernworth Oxcart Station. Using this oxcart will cost 200 gold, but the trip is well-worth it, as your best early game armor and weapons can be purchased in Checkpoint Rest Town.
Before setting out, be aware that the best armor and weapons are going to cost anywhere from 8,000 to 30,000 gold roughly, so depending on your current wealth, you might need to make multiple trips out to fully outfit yourself and your Pawn.
There’s a decent chance your oxcart will be waylaid by an Ogre on this route, so be ready for a tough fight!
Dragon’s Dogma 2: All Conditions, Elements, And Debilitations
DD2 has a ton of things that can influence battles. Some of these include Conditions/Debilitations and Element Damage. Here’s a breakdown of those.
Best Weapons & Armor At Celeste’s Smithy
After arriving in Checkpoint Rest Town, head toward the center of town, along the main path south, to reach Celeste’s Smithy. You’ll find the typical weapons and armor iconography outside her shop.
Inside, you’ll meet Celeste, who offers your typical smithy services — Buying, Selling, and Enhancing Equipment.
If you’re just slightly shy of coin for that awesome piece of armor or deadly weapon, consider selling your currently equipped gear to swap it out for the fancy new stuff.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: All Maister Locations
Maisters allow you to master a Vocation and obtain its Ultimate Skill. Here’s the location of all those Maisters and the skills they unlock.
Best Mystic Spearhand Early Game Weapon
Infernal Edge Gives You An Edge In Battle
Unfortunately, Celeste’s offerings don’t include any noteworthy weapons for the Mystic Spearhand Vocation, but you won’t have to travel too far to acquire one of the coolest available in the early game. Infernal Edge, found at the Cenotaph overlooking the Ancient Battleground location, delivers some awesome firepower (literally; it comes with +50% Fire damage).
As shown in the map above, you’ll need to travel to Ancient Battleground, which can be found to the northeast of Checkpoint Rest Town, and to the northwest of Harve Village.
In order to acquire Infernal Edge, you’ll need to follow the path toward Ancient Battleground, where you’ll encounter Oskar, who will request your aid in completing his journey to the Cenotaph, located along the cliffs above Ancient Battleground. Agreeing to help Oskar will begin the Tolled to Rest sidequest, which simply requires you to escort Oskar through the hazardous ruins packed with Harpies that lead into Ancient Battleground, then up toward the Cenotaph.
Along this path, you will also encounter a Drake duking it out with an armored Cyclops in Ancient Battleground’s basin. You do not need to engage with these vicious foes; simply head up along the northern path, leading up to the Cenotaph.
After heading into the ruins with Oskar, he will reward you with the Ancient Battlefield Key, which can be used to unlock one of the locked doors you passed a few moments prior (just a couple hallways back from the place where he gave you the key). It unlocks a room with two chests, one of which will contain Infernal Edge.

Aside from its excellent Strength and Magick stats for how early you can acquire this excellent Duospear, the standout stat here has to be the +50% Fire damage. Even after you acquire better weapons with higher overall stats, Infernal Edge can still hold a valuable place in your arsenal against enemies weak to fire (Harpies, Griffins, etc).
