Anime fans are anxious for season 5 of Black Clover to continue, and after a hit movie and the manga hitting its stride with the series’ final arc, it may return sooner than expected. Author Yūki Tabata’s story of Asta, a magicless but determined teenager set on becoming the Wizard King in a world filled with magic knights and fearsome devils, unfortunately, took a hiatus from both the manga and anime. Still, with the manga’s return and the Black Clover: The Sword of the Wizard King film becoming a hit on Netflix, the anime series’ return seems more likely than ever before.
It’s been since Spring 2021 that the Black Clover anime last aired with episode #170. While the episode featured a long-awaited reconciliation that’ll help boost Asta to unseen levels of strength, it was a lackluster final episode for the epic Shōnen series. The manga has not only concluded the incredible Spade Kingdom Raid Arc the anime left off on, but has also made a good deal of progress in what’s likely the final arc of Black Clover. Without spoiling things for anime watchers, they have much to look forward to in Season 5 of the Black Clover anime.
While the anime was releasing episodes weekly, it was beginning to get close to catching up with the manga. To avoid stretching episode pacing too thin or adding obnoxious filler arcs, Black Clover‘s anime paused production. However, now that the manga’s final stretch has begun, season 5 of the anime has a lot of exciting ground to cover.
The Latest News on Black Clover Season 5
Season 5 of the Black Clover anime has not officially been announced to be in production. However, an announcement is likely now that the manga has released enough material for a new season to cover. The reason for such a delay could be that the studio that adapted the anime’s previous seasons, Studio Pierrot, has been working on the stunning and celebrated Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War adaption. With Pierrot’s skills continuing to grow and the success of the Black Clover: The Sword of the Wizard King movie, the continuation of the Black Clover anime seems inevitable.
The Story of Black Clover Season 5
The existence of Devils and the influence of their terrible power has shaken Black Clover‘s world. Magical knights from multiple kingdoms have united to combat the Dark Triad, who plan on opening a gateway to the Underworld. If that were to happen, countless Devils would roam the lands, and its citizens would suffer greatly under a new world order.
While the anime left off with a Devil’s assault on the Heart Kingdom and Noelle’s group, the next part of the story should see Asta gain an impressive new power in time for him and his allies to take on the Dark Triad.
Which Characters Can Fans Expect to See in Black Clover Season 5
The Devil’s in the Details
With Black Clover season 4’s conclusion giving fans the heartwarming union of Asta and Liebe, a hypothetical season 5 would entail this union being put to deadly use. But Liebe is not the only featured devil in the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc; in fact, the entire Dark Triad of the Spade Kingdom, each of whom contracted with one of the three rulers of the underworld. As the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc features the most satisfying battles in Black Clover, the show would feature confrontations with the following deadly adversaries:
- Dante Zogratis and Lucifero
- Vanica Zogratis and Megicula
- Zenon Zogratis and Beelzebub
- Lilith and Nahamah
- Moris Libardirt
The last pair, both devils named Lilith and Nahamah, would serve as one of the earliest fights for Asta and Liebe to face, where they’d showcase the incredible might of their union, preceded by Nacht’s confrontation with them. Along with a showstopping visual showcase, as that fight’s panels indicate, this serves as a delectable amuse-bouche of subsequent fights. While there are predictable battles, including Yuno Grinberryall getting his most glorious moment yet in a climactic battle against one of the Dark Triad, a shockingly excellent Black Clover battle between Dante Zogratis and a Black Bulls mainstay is imminent.
Given Black Clover’s studio, Pierrot, pivoting toward a seasonal anime production slate, a hypothetical season 5 would not likely immediately deliver the same episode output as previous seasons. This means the season would predominantly focus on the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc, with space for future seasons to adapt the final arc in the manga. This means fans hoping to see the Hino Kingdom and a certain character named Ichika’s connection to Yami will have to wait even longer.
Black Clover Season 5 Has No Official Release Date
There is currently no release date for season 5 of the Black Clover anime. The start of production of the new season has also yet to be announced. However, several leaks on X have suggested that after the success of the Black Clover: The Sword of the Wizard King movie, a new season has been greenlit and will be released sometime in 2024. Still, those leaks have not been confirmed, and it’s possible that the anime may wait until the final chapter of Black Clover is released to continue.
Why is Studio Pierrot Taking So Long with Black Clover Season 5?
Black Clover is an incredibly popular anime and manga franchise, as evidenced by the success of Sword of the Wizard King. The Black Clover manga published its 371st chapter in April while the last episode of Black Clover season 4 covered the events of chapters 268 through 270, with a touch of chapter 272. A potential season 5 of Black Clover would have over 100 chapters to adapt, meaning there should be more than enough material for Studio Pierrot to pull from.
Despite the abundance of source material though, the problem Studio Pierrot may be facing in terms of Black Clover season 5 may have much more to do with studio priorities. Studio Pierrot has their hands full at the moment. With season 5 of Kingdom airing earlier in the year, Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master, starting back in April, and the third part of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War on the horizon, it’s clear that Pierrot has taken on a lot of projects.
In addition to projects that have either just been released or are in the pipeline, there are a few odd cases that may be taking up the studio’s time. Naruto was announced to return for four new episodes but was delayed for quality reasons. It’s unknown if Pierrot is still actively working on those or if that is cancelled. A hypothetical Part 2 of Boruto is also probably in the works given the positive reception of the manga’s second part even from those who had problems with Boruto’s first part.
Adding to the complications with bringing Black Clover back, Studio Pierrot’s president hinted at changes to the studio that would focus their efforts far more on quality rather than quantity. Taking all this into account, it’s likely that Black Clover season 5 will be announced after the conclusion of another big Pierrot project like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. Pierrot has seen enough success with the franchise that it would only make sense to continue it. Still, given Pierrot’s shifting priorities, nothing that hasn’t been officially announced is a sure bet.
Where Will Season 5 of Black Clover Stream When it is Released?
Considering Black Clover season 5 hasn’t been officially announced yet, it may be premature to say where the new season will stream if and when it is released. Based on past seasons however, it’s likely that Black Clover season 5 will release on Crunchyroll and Netflix. One wrinkle though is that Netflix was the exclusive streaming home of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, meaning it’s also possible that Netflix will want exclusivity for future seasons.
Once an official announcement, news, or a trailer about the return of the Black Clover anime is released, Screen Rant will magically appear to let fans know.
