People were warned to ‘stay inside’ their homes today after a man was found dead with ‘suspicious items’.
The man, who has not been named, was found dead at around 12pm after officers conducted a welfare check at his home in Stockport, Manchester.
But an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team had to be deployed to search the property as ‘suspicious items’ were found.
Manchester Evening News (MEN) reported that the objects were unused firearms, with witnesses claiming they were from ‘World War Two’.
Neighbours along Woodhall Crescent, near Reddish Vale Country Park, were ordered to stay inside by police.
The residential street was taped off, leaving locals shaken.
One woman, who asked not to be named, said: ‘It’s unnerving, especially when you’ve got kids and stuff.’
Philip Nightingale added that he had just come back from a shopping trip when he saw a bomb squad had swarmed his neighbourhood.
‘I was a bit scared when I saw the bomb squad. I thought, “What the hell is going on here?”‘ he said.
‘Half of the neighbours were out. The police officer said stay in the house. It’s never a dull moment round here.’
Bomb disposal officers left the home at around 5pm.
While the road has since reopened, police remain at the scene.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Greater Manchester Police were called to Woodhall Crescent in Stockport at around midday today (Monday 8 April 2024) to a report for the concern of the welfare of a man.
‘Officers attended and sadly found a man deceased at the scene which is believed to not be suspicious and next of kin have been informed.
‘Whilst entering the property suspicious items were found and Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) subsequently attended to inspect. This has now been completed and those items deemed safe.
‘Enquiries on ongoing, with a cordon put in place at the time, to establish the full circumstances and ensure the safety of residents.’
