Born Again’s Mayor Fisk Is The Most Exciting Change To The MCU Since Civil War

Daredevil: Born Again’s Mayor Fisk is going to bring one of the most exciting changes to the MCU since Captain America: Civil War. In the 2016 Captain America movie, the Avengers were divided over new government legislation demanding oversight over superpowered heroes and vigilantes. Now, it seems as though Wilson Fisk will be continuing those themes in New York City once he becomes its new mayor.

Mirroring events in the original Marvel Comics, Matthew Murdock’s Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin (Vincent D’onofrio) will be clashing like they never have before in the upcoming revival series Daredevil: Born Again. Looking to gain a new form of power by becoming a politician, it’s already been teased and set up that “Mayor Fisk” will soon be a troubling reality in the MCU’s New York. To that end, one can expect some pretty big and exciting status quo changes for the MCU thanks to Kingpin’s upcoming role in Daredevil: Born Again.

Daredevil: Born Again Is Making Wilson Fisk Mayor Of New York

Running For Office With A Clear Agenda

As was teased at the end of Marvel’s Echo, Wilson Fisk will soon be running to become the next mayor of New York City. Given his public criminal record, it remains to be seen how this is feasibly possible (not to mention the legality behind it). That said, recent real-world events have coincidentally proven that convictions don’t necessarily prohibit one’s ability to be elected.

Regardless, New York’s former Kingpin of Crime becoming its new mayor feels like an inevitability in the MCU’s future. As a result, this new power will undoubtedly make Matt Murdock’s mission to stop him that much harder, both as a lawyer and as Daredevil. Likewise, it’s also been teased that Wilson Fisk will be running on a very specific platform, just as he did in the original Marvel Comics.

New York Is Now Hostile Territory For Superheroes

A Massive Effect on the MCU Superhero Status Quo

It’s expected that Wilson Fisk will mainly be running on an anti-vigilante platform, just like he did on the page. Once elected (after fixing the vote) in the comics, Kingpin even went so far as to outlaw vigilantes from New York entirely using the Powers Act (as seen in the Devil’s Reign crossover event). Using a private task force to arrest heroes and further police the city under his directives, it does seem as though similar tactics will likely be implemented by D’onofrio’s Mayor Fisk in Daredevil: Born Again.

“It certainly looks as though all New York-based heroes in the MCU will likely be affected by Mayor Fisk once he takes office…”

As seen in the footage and teasers for Daredevil: Born Again thus far, vigilantes like The Punisher and White Tiger look to be in danger, Likewise, other figures like the serial-killing artist Muse will likely only serve to make Fisk’s anti-vigilante even more popular (just like in the comics). It’s also worth noting that Ms. Marvel’s father has been shown being protected by Murdock (and it may be because of his vigilante daughter). To that end, it certainly looks as though all New York-based heroes in the MCU will likely be affected by Mayor Fisk once he takes office (which would likely include Spider-Man as well).

Mayor Fisk Follows On Perfectly From The Themes Of Civil War

A War On MCU Vigilantes Following Civil War’s Sokovia Accords

Much like the Sokovia Accords, it looks as though Mayor Fisk will likely be tapping into similar sentiments and arguments made in 2016’s Civil War. Likewise, 2022’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (and Matt Murdock’s guest appearance) confirmed that some form of the Accords still exists in the current MCU. To that end, it wouldn’t be that much of a surprise if Fisk’s anti-vigilante campaign and subsequent laws are formed on the back of the original legislation created by the United Nations.

At any rate, New York becoming hostile to MCU heroes in Daredevil: Born Again would be a huge status quo change all around, continuing the themes from one of the MCU’s best movies. To that end, it certainly seems like Mayor Fisk will serve as a critical force for change in the MCU going forward, one that could very well lead to future MCU events on both small and big screens alike. After all, one of the most prominent cities in the MCU suddenly becoming unwelcome to heroes is something that would be very hard to ignore.

Daredevil: Born Again is set to begin streaming on March 4th, 2025.
