Brendan Rodgers has claimed that ‘absolutely massive’ Celtic would finish higher in the Premier League than where Manchester United did this term.

The Red Devils endured a tough campaign in Erik ten Hag’s second season as manager, finishing eighth in the top-flight while Celtic won the Scottish title.

Former Liverpool boss Rodgers reckons that if his Celtic side left the Scottish Premiership to join the Premier League, they’d finish sixth as a ‘minimum’.

While there are no concrete plans for Celtic and fellow Scottish giants Rangers to move across to English football, it’s a topic which has long been widely debated.

‘Celtic and Rangers, and obviously I can only talk from a Celtic perspective, is an absolutely massive club worldwide,’ Celtic boss Rodgers told talkSPORT.

‘There’s no doubt if Celtic was in the Premier League it would be up there, minimum, in that top six bracket.

‘Wherever you go in the world, you will meet Celtic supporters. The fan base, the history of the club, that’s what makes it a truly, truly massive club.’

The last time Celtic faced English opposition in a competitive match came in the 2016-17 Champions League, when they were grouped with Manchester City.

Their meeting at Parkhead ended in a 3-3 draw while Celtic also took a point in the reverse fixture at the Etihad as it finished 1-1.

Celtic have played a total of 20 competitive matches against English teams, winning seven, drawing seven and losing six.

The last time Celtic competitively played United, they drew 1-1 in the 2008-09 Champions League.

The Glasgow giants have played United four times in total, winning once, drawing once and losing twice.
