Britain has been urged to consider reintroducing conscription to boost army numbers and deter Russian aggression and threats.

Earlier this year one of our top generals warned that Brits could be conscripted to fight if full-on war with Russia breaks out – after claiming our military is ‘too small’.

Earlier this week Putin said Russia is primed to launch nuclear warheads, which safe to say would cause devastation in the UK and US.

Latvia introduced conscription for men aged between 18 and 27 over fears Russia could invade, meaning all able bodied men must complete 11 months of military service.

And now Latvia’s foreign minister has said Britain should do the same thing.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Krisjanis Karins said: ‘We would strongly recommend this. We are developing and fleshing out a system of what we call a total defence involving all parts of civil society.

‘We need to plan and train and supply and plan and train and supply and make that visible to the Russians.

‘We will not stop them from wanting to have imperialistic ambitions, but we can make sure they don’t consider coming our way.’

It comes as German intelligence documents suggest Putin could launch a large-scale attack on the West within two years.

Germany has recently observed a ‘significant intensification of Russian arms’, the Sun reports.

The classified report apparently suggests Russia is preparing for large-scale conflict with the West, and is reorganising its army, troop movements, and missile deployments in the west of the country.

The report allegedly says: ‘A significant intensification of Russian arms production is being observed, which could lead to Russia doubling its military power in the next five years compared to today, especially in conventional weapons.’

The projections reportedly led intelligence services to conclude that an attack on Nato territory could ‘no longer be ruled out’ from 2026.
