Cole Palmer returns for Chelsea against Newcastle United on Sunday after he was absent from Thursday’s Conference League win over Panathinaikos.

Palmer, who has established himself as Chelsea’s most important attacking player, is unable to feature in the first half of the Blues’ European campaign.

That’s because he was left out of Chelsea’s dedicated Conference League squad with the club understood to be mindful of his workload.

After a midweek rest, though, Palmer is back available, and the same is true for Romeo Lavia and Wesley Fofana, who were also not included in the Conference League squad.

Levi Colwill, Moises Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson, Reece James and Malo Gusto also all remained in west London with Maresca resting almost entire preferred XI.

Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella the only first-team regulars on midweek duty with Joao Felix and Chistopher Nkunku on the score sheet in Greece.

Lavia made his return from injury in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in Chelsea’s last Premier League match, as did captain Reece James.

Fofana and Cucurella missed the Liverpool match via suspension but both men are able to feature against the Magpies at Stamford Bridge.

Ben Chilwell has been struggling with illness but he is also expected to be available for selection ahead of the clash with Eddie Howe’s side.
