Jeremy Clarkson has recently opened his own pub, and after some outrage at the prices, his Clarkson’s Farm co-stars have defended the establishment.
The Farmer’s Dog first opened to the public on August 23 after Jeremy bought the building in Asthall, near Burford in Oxfordshire, earlier this year.
Following the opening, there has been plenty of chatter about the cost of a visit. A pint will set punters back around £5.50, and food ranges from £5 for a sausage roll to £19 for a steak pie with mash and Hawkstone gravy.
As well as selling food and drink, merchandise is on offer – the most expensive item is a Hawkstone jumper for £60, with other items including an apron for £40, a dog bowl for £35 and a bottle opener for £14.
When the prices were listed on the pub’s Instagram account, Andy commented underneath: ‘Prices are ridiculous! Hawkstone lager actually tastes like dishwater. But I love Clarkson but to pay a millionaire these prices is ridiculous.’
Marc added: ‘Really necessary to charge those prices for merch? Absolutely ripping people off because it’s on TV, it’s sick.’
However, there are two people firmly in 64-year-old Jeremy’s corner, who’ve spent time sampling the pub’s goods.
‘I’ve spent a little time there. It’s fantastic, it’s great, it’s really just a good traditional pub with good food, highlighting the quality of British produce,’ farmer Kaleb Cooper told Metro.co.uk at The National Television Awards.
‘I don’t think there’s any difference in prices to any other pub.’
Money guy Charlie Ireland, who has been dubbed Cheerful Charlie due to his habit of often delivering bad financial news by Jeremy, helped him to dictate the costs. He stated that the prices are highly competitive for the Cotswolds area.
‘We aimed for a bit cheaper than the local area because the pubs are sort of renowned for high prices. We’ve tried to make it affordable for people,’ he explained.
The new venture reportedly cost Jeremy £1,000,000, and he has repeatedly stated his intention to serve products only grown or reared by British farmers but recently said he failed.
He has also been amusing fans with his ever-growing list of barred customers.
Viewers of the Amazon Prime Video will undoubtedly get to see more of the behind-the-scenes of the pub opening when the fourth series airs.
Since its first episode in 2021, Clarkson’s Farm has gained quite the following, becoming one of the biggest shows of the streaming era in the UK.
The docuseries follows Jeremy as he tries to manage his 1,000-acre farm, Diddly Squat, in Oxfordshire, alongside farm manager Kaleb, land agent Charlie, ‘head of security’ Gerald Cooper, and his partner Lisa Hogan.
Jeremy recently revealed that the next instalment should be released around May, and Kaleb teased that there are challenges they have to overcome.
‘We’ve almost finished filming, and it has rained a lot. It’s been s**t for people, but it’s been ten times worse for farmers,’ he said.
Despite the bad weather, there will also be plenty of uplifting moments too.
‘Every season is happy and shows us all working together. Even when the cameras aren’t there that’s what we’re doing,’ he said.
