Warning: spoilers ahead for The Penguin season 8 finale.

Colin Farrell has expressed his excitement for The Batman Part II as the explosive season finale of The Penguin ended on a tantalising cliffhanger.

Throughout the eight-episode run of the DC Comics-inspired TV show, the actor has astounded the audience with his incredible performance as Oz Cobb, as fans witnessed the gangster rise through the ranks of Gotham’s criminal underworld.

Before the final instalment – which saw Oz devastatingly murder his new henchman Victor (Rhenzy Feliz) in cold blood – Metro spoke to Colin about his hopes for the character in the upcoming sequel to the 2022 film The Batman, where he made his debut in the role.

At the end of The Penguin episode 8, the iconic Bat-Signal could be seen shining in the sky, as Oz shared a dance in his new penthouse with his lover Eve (Carmen Ejogo).

Meanwhile, in Arkham Asylum, Sofia Gigante (formerly Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti) receives a letter from her half-sister Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman), who was portrayed by Zoe Kravitz in the recent Batman movie.

All signs point to the events of The Penguin rolling directly into the Batman sequel, with Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne likely having to contend with Oz holding even more power as a criminal kingpin than he did before.

Fans are also excited beyond belief over the prospect of Sofia and Selina teaming up, after the former was locked back in Arkham by Oz, her former driver-turned-nemesis.

When asked whether he could tell us anything about The Batman Part II, or if he had any hopes himself for the movie, Colin answered: ‘No hopes. This all seems very fresh, we just wrapped in February. It seems fresh and yet, so long ago. But I have no idea what the second film is going to hold.’

Referring to The Batman director Matt Reeves, the 48-year-old continued: ‘I know Matt’s been head down, bent over trying to figure it out. And this whole world, I mean, this eight hours of television called The Penguin, it had to fit in with Matt’s universe. Like Matt is the wizard of the whole thing, this universe is all his creation, obviously sourcing it from all the material and filtering all the material that’s gone on before, since the Penguin first appeared in 1941 in Batman.

‘Matt’s an extraordinary writer, an extraordinary artist, and he cares so much about the material and the fans and this world. So I’m really excited to see what the second film holds.’

The Penguin viewers were left in a state of awe after watching the season finale, with some saying that they were ‘screaming at their TVs’ as they found out what the shocking episode entailed.

‘I loved this episode because it really nailed home why you should despise the Penguin. Oz is not some misunderstood character like Mr. Freeze or a tragic character like Two Face, he’s a monster who takes advantage of people to further his own goals. This show was overall amazing,’ said X user @wheeljack167964.

‘I saw that coming from a mile away. It didn’t make it any less heartbreaking,’ @jelani82 commented, in response to watching Victor’s tragic death.

Remarking on the finale and show on the whole, @dkmsully wrote: ‘#ThePenguin Episode 8 (A Great or Little Thing) is by far the best episode of the year. I can’t wait for The Batman sequel.’

‘Best show I’ve seen in a while #ThePenguin what a finale,’ said @DavidMcKaiju, as @aresluoga added: ‘#ThePenguin is one of the best-limited series you’ll ever get the chance to see in your lifetime. It’s a must-watch, a masterpiece of television.’

The Penguin is available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
