The Scottish actor is best known for portraying the tenth incarnation of the titular Time Lord in Doctor Who from 2005 to 2010 and, in 2023, returned to the BBC show as the fourteenth incarnation of the Doctor. Tennant also stars in Good Omens, based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel, which has officially been renewed for a third and final season.
Now, as the wait for Good Omens season 3 continues, Tennant’s new series has received a release date. At the Edinburgh TV Festival (via Deadline), Disney’s director of scripted content in Europe, Lee Mason, announced that Rivals will be released on October 18 on Hulu in the United States, and Disney+ in the United Kingdom. All eight episodes will drop on that date.
What To Know About Rivals
Story, Cast, & More
Rivals is based on Jilly Cooper’s novel of the same name, the second book in the Rutshire Chronicles series, which spans 11 novels published between 1986 and 2023. The series is set against the backdrop of the extravagance and shenanigans of the power-hungry social elite in England during the 1980s, and specifically explores the ruthless landscape of independent television in 1986, centering on the intense rivalry between Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and his neighbor Tony Baddingham (Tennant). The former is a former Olympian, member of parliament, and a notorious womanizer, while the latter is the controller of Corinium Television.
Additional characters include TV presenter Declan O’Hara (Aidan Turner), a passionate intellectual known for his fiery temper who is lured to Corinium from the BBC, and Freddie Jones (Danny Dyer), a self-made millionaire in the electronics industry. The wider ensemble cast also includes Nafessa Williams, Bella Maclean (Sex Education), Katherine Parkinson, Victoria Smurfit, Claire Rushbrook, Oliver Chris, Lisa McGrillis, Emily Atack, Rufus Jones, Luke Pasqualino, and Catriona Chandler.
