Dick Van Dyke left fans in tears in the ‘heartwarming’ new music video from Coldplay that sees the Hollywood legend celebrate his birthday with the band.
Filmed at the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star’s Malibu home, the actor reflects on his life, career, and ageing as he prepares to turn 99 in the music video for All My Love.
The seven-minute video begins with the Fitzwilly actor walking out to the band, with vocalist and pianist Chris Martin sitting behind a piano.
It includes snapshots from across the acting legend’s career, as well as several heartfelt clips of Dick speaking about love and life.
‘I’m acutely aware that I could go any day now,’ he says in one clip. ‘But I don’t know why it doesn’t concern me. I’m not afraid of it. I have the feeling that I’m gonna be alright.”
Dick appears as sprightly as ever as he gets his dancing shoes on as he recreates the famous ‘Penguin Dance’ from Mary Poppins as well as ‘The Twizzle’ from The Dick Van Dyke Show.
At one point, director Spike Jonze asks the multi-award-winning actor what love is, to which he responds: ‘Boy, they’ve been asking that question for centuries. I don’t know.
‘It’s certainly the feeling of caring about the welfare and the life of the other person, as much as you care for yourself.’
The music video shows viewers exactly what love is in an emotional scene where Dick is joined by his children, grandchildren, and his wife Arlene Silver to dance barefoot.
All My Love ends with Chris improvising a song for the actor, which leaves Dick shocked and delighted.
After releasing the video, viewers took to social media to say they had been reduced to tears by the ‘moving’ and ‘adorable’ clips.
‘Thanks for making me cry. What a beautiful video and also beautiful acknowledgement of an incredible life of Dick Van Dyke .. this is something to be cherished (sic),’ Oceansunrise_80 wrote on X.
Devpilai80 added: ‘This is so heartwarming. Coldplay you legends. 🥹 Chris you’re truly a gem.’
Others praised Chris and his Coldplay bandmates – including Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion – as ‘legends’ for documenting Dick’s life.
Ellie Martens gushed: ‘Two of my favourite men ever. I was soo not prepared for that – I am totally not crying.’
Hellobye1024500 dubbed All My Love ‘the most beautiful music video [Coldplay] have ever made’, while Straditeresa said it was ‘devastatingly tender.’
After pulling out of an event, Dick said that he is ‘praying that he makes it’ to his next birthday as he’s ‘pretty old.’
Announcing his cancellation at FanX, a message under his profile on the official website reads: ‘We are sorry to announce that Dick Van Dyke is not able to travel to FanX at this time.
‘He expresses his gratitude to all of those who continue to support him but, at almost 99 years of age, traveling and interacting with thousands of people is more than he is able to do at this time.’
He also pulled out of a planned appearance at the Emmys, after previously being announced as a presenter.
