Dr. John Watson uses his detective skills in the first teaser for Watson. Morris Chestnut plays Dr. Watson in the upcoming CBS series that is both a medical drama and an investigative story. It is set in present-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as Dr. Watson deals with difficult medical cases and must contend with his best friend, Sherlock Holmes, having died at the hands of the villainous James Moriarty. He leads Pittsburgh’s Holmes Clinic, which is named in memory of his beloved friend and colleague.
On Instagram, Watson released its first teaser that shows the titular doctor explaining how he can help his patients by essentially being a detective and solving the mysteries that plague them. Check out the teaser below:
Dr. Watson’s many talents as a medical professional and a former consulting detective are teased, as is his ability to take firsthand risks, as the end of the teaser sees him jumping into a stormy ocean. The Pittsburgh setting is also highlighted by a shot of the city’s picturesque Duquesne Incline making its descent.
What This Means For Watson
It Is Noticeably Different From Past Sherlock Holmes Stories
Watson‘s first teaser depicts its protagonist as a suave doctor at the heart of a modern-day medical drama. It already looks and feels significantly different from many past Sherlock Holmes adaptations that are set in a past version of London and that focus on Sherlock and Watson as a crime-solving duo. Watson instead focuses on its lead character solving medical mysteries in an American city while navigating a life without Sherlock at his side.

While it is technically another adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, it is charting its own unique course, and is distinct from Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Young Sherlock series. Watson‘s premise sets the stage for a procedural medical series where Dr. Watson will have to solve a baffling new medical case each week, but the lingering threat of Moriarty and the injustice of Sherlock’s death will feed into a larger overarching story. This can create an effective balance between the episodic cases of the week while gradually building to a confrontation with Sherlock’s greatest nemesis.
Our Take On The Watson Teaser
Watson’s Distinct Qualities Make It Exciting
Between Watson, Young Sherlock, Enola Holmes 3, and the long-awaited Sherlock Holmes 3 starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, there is arguably a surplus of these stories on the way. Nevertheless, Watson still feels excited because its premise, tone, and setting are so different from the other upcoming stories, along with many of the iterations that have preceded it. Chestnut is a charismatic actor and can help make Watson a series that enthusiasts of medical dramas, mysteries, and the universe of Sherlock Holmes can enjoy.
