Enzo Maresca insists Ben Chilwell could still feature for Chelsea in the Premier League this season after being told he had no future at Stamford Bridge.
Chilwell was made to train away from Chelsea’s first-team squad in the summer as the club looked to move the 27-year-old on in the summer window.
However, Chilwell was unable to secure a move away from Stamford Bridge and is now set to stay at least until January.
Chilwell was given his first minutes of the season in Chelsea’s 5-0 win over Barrow in the Carabao Cup earlier this week and Maresca has now indicated that the defender may receive more playing time in the Premier League.
Asked if Chilwell, a £50 million signing from Leicester City four years ago, has a chance of playing again in the Premier League for Chelsea, Maresca replied: ‘Yeah, in the moment that we need, for sure, why not?
‘I’ve said many times and I will say again, in the moment Chilly is with us he’s one of the Chelsea players, he’s one of our players and if we need we’ll give him a chance and minutes.’
Asked if he had made a mistake by telling Chilwell to leave, Maresca replied: ‘We all make mistakes, probably yes, probably no, I don’t know.
‘I’ve said many times, I’m here to many times I’m here to make decisions, and sometimes they’re good decisions, sometimes they’re not good.
‘The only thing I can say is there is not any bad intentions from me. It’s just to see things and to try to think the good thing and the best thing for the club.’
Chelsea are preparing to host Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
