Disney and Lucasfilm started a whole new Star Wars continuity in 2014, with the sprawling canon only set to expand further before the end of the 2020s. Thanks to the expansion of Lucasfilm’s filmmaking endeavors, the future of the studio’s storytelling has never looked brighter, from upcoming Star Wars TV shows to the return of feature films in a galaxy far, far away. Not only is Star Wars set to dominate the film and TV industry in the future as expected, but the transmedia nature of the franchise is stronger than ever.
The main Skywalker saga ended with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, which ushered in a new age for the franchise as it became one of the main draws of the Disney+ streaming service. From the ever-growing success of The Mandalorian to more recent entries in Star Wars’ timeline, the franchise’s TV dominance continues. Aside from ventures on the small and big screens, the various books, novels, comic books, and video games making up Lucasfilm’s transmedia storytelling continue, promising a seemingly never-ending slate of Star Wars goodness in the foreseeable future.
Upcoming Star Wars Movies
While Star Wars took a hiatus from the big screen following the culmination of the Skywalker Saga, the franchise that epitomizes the theater-going experience will finally return. As of the beginning of 2024, there are a total of 10 Star Wars movies reportedly in development. While the futures of some of these projects are still up in the air, several of them are beginning production in the coming months and years. With that being said, here is every Star Wars movie slated for production before the end of the decade.
The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026)
The next confirmed Star Wars movie is The Mandalorian & Grogu. This film was announced in January 2024 as a theatrical spin-off of the beloved Disney+ series, with filming beginning by August of that year. Jon Favreau is returning to direct and write the movie which will see Din Djarin and his lovable adopted son Grogu grace the big screen in 2026. It’s still unclear whether the film will replace The Mandalorian season 4’s story or act as a prequel; Star Wars fans can expect the next theatrical release to center on the titular bounty hunter and his companion regardless.
Rey’s New Jedi Order Movie (TBA)
Before the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu, many expected the next Star Wars movie to be Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Skywalker film. Centered around Daisy Ridley’s Rey building a new Star Wars Jedi Order, the film will take place 15 years after the ending of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Expected to take the franchise into the next era, Rey’s new Jedi Order movie does not have a confirmed release date, though Lucasfilm has a slot held for December 18, 2026. With production set to begin in 2024, 2026 could see two Star Wars films released in theaters.
Dave Filoni’s New Republic Movie (TBA)
Rey’s new Jedi Order movie was announced alongside two other feature films, one being a New Republic-era film by Dave Filoni. The film was described by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy as the culmination of the story that began with The Mandalorian. As such, the film is expected to stem from Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, as well as Filoni’s own story in Ahsoka season 2. Many have theorized that the film will be a canon adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire, a theory made more likely by the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the New Republic timeline.
Filoni’s New Republic film does not have a confirmed release date, though it could be released on December 17, 2027, another date held by Lucasfilm for a Star Wars theatrical film.
James Mangold’s Dawn Of The Jedi Movie (TBA)
Alongside Rey’s movie and Filoni’s New Republic project, it was also confirmed that filmmaker James Mangold will direct a feature Star Wars film. The project is currently without a title, though many have taken to calling it “Dawn of the Jedi” given its placement on the Star Wars timeline. The film was confirmed to be set 25,000 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and will explore the first contact between the Prime Jedi and the Force. Described as a Ten Commandments of the Force, Mangold’s film will completely reshape the entire Star Wars franchise.

Upcoming Star Wars TV Shows
Just as the future of theatrical Star Wars looks bright, the dominance the franchise has sustained in the realm of TV shows no sign of slowing down. With several TV projects confirmed for release in the coming years, Disney+’s content will continue to be bolstered by a galaxy far, far away. Stretching across all eras of the Star Wars timeline, the future of TV in the franchise is set to be just as consequential as its theatrical releases.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
The Mandalorian era continues to expand with Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which will premiere on Disney+ from December 3. The series will be set amid the timeline of the aforementioned shows and tell the story of four children who make a startling discovery on their home planet, get lost in the galaxy, and go on an adventure to get back home. Jude Law is set to star in the series as a mysterious Jedi, with the show tying directly into the plot of other upcoming New Republic shows and movies.
Andor Season 2
Andor season 2 is another of Star Wars’ upcoming TV shows that will culminate the story that began in season 1. The continuation will take place over the span of four years leading into the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While Andor season 2’s release date is unconfirmed, rumors and cast insights have placed it as an early 2025 release. Given that Andor season 1 is one of the more critically acclaimed Star Wars projects in history, the anticipation for Andor season 2’s story only grows with each passing day.
The Mandalorian Season 4
The situation surrounding The Mandalorian season 4 is certainly interesting after the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu as a movie. Even before the release of The Mandalorian season 3, Jon Favreau stated that the scripts for season 4 had been written. However, news became scarce concerning The Mandalorian season 4 until The Mandalorian & Grogu was announced. Disney is yet to confirm whether the latter will replace the former, meaning more information is needed regarding whether a continuation of the show will come to Disney+.
Ahsoka Season 2
Alongside the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu came confirmation that Dave Filoni is working on Ahsoka season 2. After the success of the first season on Disney+ and the show’s integral nature to the New Republic era, the announcement of Ahsoka season 2 was to be expected. Little is known about the series thus far, including the story, returning cast members, and a release date. That said, Ahsoka season 2’s story is likely to be released before Filoni’s New Republic-era movie in the next few years.
Upcoming Star Wars Novels
In 2020, Lucasfilm Publishing launched Star Wars: The High Republic, a transmedia initiative that will last several years and is set roughly 200 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. The long-lasting plan for the High Republic was split into three phases, with each one fleshing out the era, its characters, and the escalating conflict between the Jedi and the Nihil. As Phase III of the High Republic began in 2023, the coming years have several books and novels from the era set for release.
