More and more details about the Peaky Blinders movie are beginning to emerge, after Cillian Murphy confirmed it was on its way.
The Irish actor starred in the BBC series from 2013 until 2022, and after various rumours surrounding a feature film in the years that followed, an ‘explosive’ Netflix movie has officially been announced.
‘It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,’ Cillian shared in June.
‘It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.’
The upcoming movie from the period drama and crime show’s creator Steven Knight will be an ‘explosive chapter’ in the story with ‘no holds barred’.
Director Tom Harper added: ‘When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive.
‘Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.’
Here’s everything we know about it so far…
Who has been announced as part of the cast?
So far, Oppenheimer star Cillian, 48, has confirmed he’s reprising his role, and joining him are Dune actress Rebecca Ferguson, 40, and Saltburn star Barry Keoghan.
Netflix has not announced any further details about their two characters, but fans have shared their theories that The Banshees of Insherin star Barry, 31, could play Tommy Shelby’s son.
Earlier this year, Cillian said he was initially ‘relieved’ when the Birmingham-based drama ended but was keen to reprise the role of the crime gang leader.
‘To be totally honest with you, it was a bit of relief to take a break,’ he admitted.
‘I felt like we’d done such excellent work and I really loved the ambiguity of the ending.’
He added: ‘If we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.’
When could the Peaky Blinders movie be set?
Peaky Blinders, which ran from 2013 to 2022 for six seasons, followed the rise of the Shelby family from after the First World War, and the film is now expected to pick up a few years later, going into the Second World War.
According to reports, Knight previously said that the show would end with the first air-raid siren in Birmingham in 1939, but that didn’t happen, leading to speculation it may be where the movie picks up from.
Instead, the final episode ended with Tommy discovering that he wasn’t sick with terminal tuberculosis thanks to a supernatural intervention, and rode off on a horse, awaiting what the future holds in store.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk in 2022, Knight said of the film: ‘I know what the story is and I’m writing at the moment.
‘It’s a very specific story, that’s based on a true story from the Second World War and will be told in the “Peaky” way.’
When could the Peaky Blinders movie air?
While Netflix has yet to announce an official air date, we doubt it’ll be anytime soon, as the casting details remain tightly under wraps and filming does not appear to have begun.
According to Murphy’s iMDb, he’s also set to appear in drama Blood Runs Cold in the future, which is still in the pre-production stage.
Knight confirmed last year that he was finishing the script for the Peaky Blinders spin-off, telling Radio Times: ‘I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment. I just sit down at the keyboard and start.
‘It’s a bit like having a dream, for me. You sit there and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, “That’s pretty good – but where did it come from?”.’
Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
